• When: the game's structure "had already pretty much coalesced when Allston's Michael Pemulis hit age twelve and helped make it way more compelling"; the rulebook is YPW; his emeritus role is current as of YDAU
• What: Pemulis is "far and away the greatest Eschaton player in E.T.A. history" and the game's chief designer: at twelve he made it "way more compelling"; he downloaded Mathpak's EndStat stats-cruncher onto the late J.O.I.'s D.E.C. 2100, authored the decision-algorithm files "three years back," and in YPW got Hal to write the rulebook. Though he no longer plays, he retains "a kind of unofficial emeritus power of correction over Lord's calculations and mandate." His own game was lob-dependent and net-rushing; "Pemulis's lobs can nail a coin on the baseline two out of three times off either side." The game's applied math also survives in his own dictated voice: n123 is Pemulis explaining the Mean-Value megatonnage formula to Hal ("Pemulis here, dictating to Inc") — an Extreme Value Theorem walk-through with diagrams he labels PEEMSTER and HALSADICK, the jab "let d be the size of Hal's Unit" (Hal's inserted addendum: "In meters."), the verdict "This fucking works. This is fucking elegant," and the sign-off "P.S. Allston Rules." — formula, Pemulis-Hal rapport, and home-turf pride in one artifact (n123 pp. 1023-1024).
