Tine, Luria Perec, and the loyalty question at the top of the Office

• What: The Office's own single greatest exposure runs through its Chief. Tine's stenographer, Mlle. Luria P—— (here "Luria Perec," of Lamartine, county L'Islet, Québec), long doubled as amanuensis to M. DuPlessis, former asst. coordinator of the pan-Canadian Resistance; Tine's "passionate, ill-disguised attachment" to her raises the question whether he "doubles" for Québec out of love or "triples" — pretending to divulge while secretly keeping his U.S. fealty (n041 glosses "doubling"/"tripling" as intra-O.N.A.N. sobriquets). Steeply and B.S.S. keep him in place partly because a love that grand "transcends the political" — the reason "he's still got President Gentle's ear." DuPlessis himself "always suspected he tried to hold back on the information he passed sexually to Luria" (031). Marathe's mirror-argument: whatever DuPlessis's death changed, "Luria would be aware" if Tine's betrayal were real. The Office thus runs its counter-espionage over a Chief whose own final loyalty is unfixed — a structural echo of the Marathe game below. Recorded open, as printed.
