The Office's own casualties — Hank Hoyne and the intern lost to the samizdat
texture · YDAU
- When: YDAU, during the testing; recounted pre-dawn 1 May
- What: The counter-operation costs O.U.S. its own people. An idiot intern in Data Analysis steals Flatto's I/O clearance card and views a Read-Only copy; his supervisor — the Office's own head of Data Analysis, "Hoyne, Henri F.," "twenty-year man, Hank," Steeply's friend, a diabetic of exemplary self-control — goes in after him and is lost too: "in four-point restraints now. Nourishment through a tube," wanting nothing but more viewing. Steeply tried to visit and "couldn't even stand to be in the same room." Dick Willis on the I/O night-shift coins the memo-phrase for the victims' eyes, "Empty of intent" — which Steeply later insists doesn't capture it: "Stuck. Fixed. Held. Trapped. As in trapped in some sort of middle. Between two things. Pulled apart in different directions" (123). Tine has separately toured a ward of the pithed, "docile and continent but blank." The lesson both sides state on the mountainside — Marathe's words — is that the samizdat "is not to be played crazily about with."
