• What: What the Orin operation actually surfaces about the samizdat's making: from Bain (relaying an "innocent female relative" who'd been intimate with Orin), "some incident occurred in the Incandenzas' Volvo involving one of the windows and a word" — the fogged-window word that "cast a conjugal pall," in the days before JOI's suicide; and the corroboration that in his last year JOI was "working on a whole new genre of film-cartridge that Orin at the time claimed was driving Dr. Inc insane," having begun using Joelle in his work and asking her to perform in the radical new entertainment. Bain hedges it all — Orin "is not a reliable source" and has "come to regard the truth as constructed instead of reported" — but the datum points the Office at the terminal cartridge and its performer.
