• What: "Helen Steeply" penetrates the Enfield Tennis Academy grounds — her green sedan with its "neuralgiac full-front Nunhagen ad on the side" in an Authorized Guest spot (126) — ostensibly for the Orin profile, and is kept under constant watch: "Orders that deLint keep the mammoth soft-profiler in direct sight at all times were explicit and emphatic." She endures "over two hours" of Tavis interview, then works deLint through a full exhibition match for access to the son who stayed — Hal, whom the match narration calls "the samizdat's director's other son" — and is refused: Tavis's "command-decision" and E.T.A. protocol will not let a journalist interview a training junior ("We've never had a kid here interviewed"), and deLint extends the embargo to the still-better John Wayne ("we'll keep you off him as long as he's here"). The counter-intelligence operation runs aground against a private institution's own information discipline — Steeply gets the match, the ambient family intelligence, and a "No" on Hal.
