Summary

Past midnight into 2 April — the attaché's thirty-seventh birthday (2 April per scene 007's "turns thirty-seven tomorrow, Thursday, 2 April") arriving while he is still in the chair — his wife finally leaves the Mount Auburn club — five pro-sets, then the Silver-Key Lounge with the other veiled wives, playing Narjees (n.11: "rather like mah jongg without rules"), smoking kif, and delicately mocking their husbands' sexual idiosyncrasies. At home the attaché has rewound the unlabelled cartridge several times and then "configured for a recursive loop"; he sits attached to a congealed supper "having now wet both his pants and the special recliner." The Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment delivers its title image: the Entertainment reduces an adult to incontinent infancy.

What to notice

One paragraph holds both halves of the marriage five minutes apart — the wife unveiled and laughing among friends at 0015h, the husband inert at 0020h — with no break between them: the prose pans across the city inside a single paragraph's momentum, so her small communal pleasure and his terminal solitary one read as one continuous fact. Notice the pun buried in "attached to a congealed supper": the man the book only ever calls the attaché — a title that means attached — ends as pure attachment, fastened to his own feeding apparatus. And quietest of all: the date line means his thirty-seventh birthday has arrived while he sits there, unmarked by anyone, including the prose.

Beats — page-by-page

  • p. 54: 0015h: the wife's evening itemized — round-robin, lounge, Narjees [n.11], kif, soft laughter behind hands.
  • p. 54: 0020h: the attaché still viewing; the loop configured (a final act of agency in service of pure repetition); congealed supper; pants and recliner wet.

Themes in this scene

  • Entertainment and the Self: the pleasure-death mechanism made physiological — viewing that overrides continence, hunger, time; "recursive loop" as the viewer's chosen infinity. The subsidized year-name (Depend) and the scene's incontinence converge: the era's sponsor product is its citizens' end-state.
  • Annularity: "configured for a recursive loop" (p. 54) — the attaché's last voluntary act turns the Entertainment into a literal ring, output fed back as input until continence, hunger, and time dissolve; the loop-figure of his surf-and-rain sleep cartridge (scene 007) closed at kill strength.

Connections — backward & forward

Backward

  • Date resonance: the cartridge took effect 1 April YDAU — the anniversary of JOI's suicide, 1 April YTSDB (the archive's adopted dating), and the date scene 007's "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!" mailer literalizes; the Entertainment's first kill is timed to its maker's death-day. (Carlisle already files this scene under his Samizdat thread — Jim's Infinite Jest as an object of terror — in his note on this very section.)
  • The dinner-tray detail ("attached to a congealed supper") completes scene 007's ritual: the apparatus of total passive care becomes restraint apparatus.

Forward

  • Third beat of the attaché countdown (scenes 007, 011); the wife's lateness — her one independent pleasure — is what removes the last chance of interruption; she will be the next victim when she returns (pp. 78-79), then the cascade through the legation and emergency services (pp. 87).
  • The recursive loop literalizes the annular/loop figure that runs from his surf-and-rain sleep cartridge (scene 007, p. 34) to the Entertainment's own alleged content (Joelle/"Madame Psychosis" material and Molly Notkin's account).
  • The wives' kif and gentle mockery — communal, moderate, social pleasure — is staged against the solitary terminal pleasure across town: the scene is a compact thesis on what makes entertainment lethal (aloneness, perfect convenience).
  • The kif detail returns in n.27's marijuana-argot list (scene 023): the attaché scrupulously avoids kif (p. 34) while his wife smokes it socially and survives — moderate communal use vs. the abstinent man killed by the perfect pleasure (catch per Carlisle).

Notable passages (2)

  • p. 54: "which he has rewound to the beginning several times and then configured for a recursive loop" — the victim's last voluntary act is to automate his captivity.
  • p. 54: "having now wet both his pants and the special recliner." — the YDAU title image; flat clinical cadence doing the horror.
