"A cage or really a door" — the object's meaning left open; the "too perfect" joke

• What: The performer herself cannot say what was made of her. At Notkin's party Joelle wonders whether the "allegedly fatally entertaining and scopophiliac thing" JOI made of her unveiled face was "a cage or really a door," and asks "Did she kill him, somehow, just inclining veilless over that lens?" To Steeply she insists "there wasn't anything unendurable or enslaving" in either of her scenes, that the perfect-entertainment/"actual-perfection" talk is "academic rumors," and that JOI only ever called the Work "entertainments" ironically — that he took "a failed piece and told me it was too perfect to release." Whether the cartridge is lethal at all, or only rumored so, opens here from the one witness who performed in it and never saw it.
