Summary
A single sentence, the second beat of the attaché countdown: "At 2010h. on 1 April Y.D.A.U., the medical attaché is still watching the unlabelled entertainment cartridge." Forty-three minutes after settling in (1927h, scene 007's closing line), he has not moved. The clipped time-stamp form turns the Entertainment's effect into something like a case report or autopsy timeline.
What to notice
One sentence, and all of its dread sits in one adverb: "still". Everything else is apparatus — clock time, date, the Subsidized year — framed around a single human predicate, "watching", as though the person had already thinned to a data point on somebody's incident timeline. Notice that the cartridge remains "unlabelled" even now: forty-three minutes in, the narration still has nothing else to call the thing, and never will.
Beats
- p. 42: 2010h status line — still watching.
Themes in this scene
- Entertainment and the Self: the Entertainment's lethality conveyed purely by duration and stasis; spectation has replaced all other predicates ("is still watching" as the character's entire existence).
Connections
Forward
- Sequence: receives and docks cartridge ~1900h (scene 007, pp. 36-37); settled in at 1927h (scene 007's closing line, p. 37); still watching 2010h (here); looping as the wife leaves at 0015h, soiled by 0020h, 2 April (scene 014, p. 54); wife arrives 0145h (scene 025, pp. 78-79); the room fills with undistressed viewers by mid-afternoon (scene 028, p. 87).
- The interleaving technique — one-line pulses of the attaché between unrelated scenes — formally mimics the cartridge's loop and trains the reader to track Subsidized-Time stamps, needed throughout the novel. (Carlisle: the isolated pulse works "like a quick-cut in a film" — apt, given whose film is doing this to him.)
Notable passages
- p. 42: the whole scene — quotable in full as the minimal unit of the Entertainment's horror.
