• What: With every lead on the veiled performer come back negative (event 16), the object drives the A.F.R. to its "most drastic" operation yet: "to acquire members of the immediate family of the auteur, perhaps in public," to force out the buried Master. A direct raid on E.T.A. is out — "A.F.R.s fear nothing in this hemisphere except tall and steep hillsides" — so the plan is "to acquire and replace the tennis children of Québec" en route to the Academy: Balbalis leads the interception detail north through the blizzard past the Methuen Pongo checkpoint, and the mirror is "installed across the southbound lanes of the U.S. Interstate #91" at "the former place of St. Johnsbury" — "An old F.L.Q. trick," the bus's own headlights to delude it off the road. Marathe runs the details from the Antitoi shop; Fortier departs for Phoenix to join Mlle. Luria P—— in "a technical interview of more importance" (the auteur's athlete son — event 19). Meanwhile the samizdat's own field-tests grind on: Broullîme is diverted to "trouble-killing" because one newly acquired Subject (a white-wigged, cookware-laden eccentric — Randy Lenz, per the scene record; the raw names neither Subject) has been severing and pushing under the door the digits of the other Subject (a cross-dressed purse-carrier — Poor Tony Krause, per the same record) instead of his own, "marring the statistics."
