Scene 095: gately staff the removal

• p. 461: the live-in Staff job — weekday suppers (weekend menu reads 'forage,' literal for some, n.188), weekly shopping, and the Aventura: two alarms, jet-engine sound, Gately barely wedged in, "like being strapped into a missile and launched at the site of a domestic errand."
• pp. 461-462: Johnette Foltz increasingly absent (NA Commitments, wheelchair-bound fiancé); the residents' Danielle Steenbok fantasy.
• p. 462: the rap sheet — YWQMD DUI-on-suspended-license, Bad-Check/Forgery, B&E, the Demerol-in-a-Pez-container Possession (n.189 pharmacology); court pilgrimages every couple of months in the irregular green sportcoat.
• pp. 462-463: the darker issue — the eulogized Brookline "late owner"; Gately's signature meter-shunt M.O.; eight months of nail-biting until the stenographer's inquiries reveal the Murder-2 case vanished into a federal "Non-Specific Services Bureau," suspicion deflected to "shadowy Nucko-political bodies" in Quebec (n.190: felony-murder statute — even a defective pacemaker death means unbargainable time).
• p. 463: Blue-File mechanics (n.191); the one un-deferrable issue: mandatory 90 days for the suspended-license DUI, awaiting some judge's Red-File whim; Gately unafraid of jail itself (the Billerica canteen-cigarettes story) — afraid only of scarce meetings and easy Demerol inside; his real fear now is ingesting Substances: "he'll now go to literally Any Lengths to stay clean" (p. 464).
• pp. 464-465: intake flashback — he came only to dodge jail and said so; Pat: grim honesty and hopelessness are the only requirements, desperation helps; the epileptic dog spasming under his oblivious stomach-rubs; the YTMP blackout study (60% of Walpole lifers can't remember their crimes); "he couldn't recall ever having a real blackout."
• pp. 465-466: Pat's own story (Ennet House mythology per n.193) — socialite, divorce, D.T.s stroke at thirty-two, Morse-code blinks, willing to chew a rock for the founding Guy Who Didn't Even Use His First Name; her rictus, semi-claw (n.194), lurch, and the alive kind left half of her face; "the stroke had been far and away the best thing that's ever happened to her."
• p. 466: she personally drove him to most of his bigger North Shore court dates (lead foot, Handicapped plates, Gately nearly wetting himself on Rte. 1), threw the House's clout behind him; Gately can't figure the favoritism.
• pp. 466-467: the program performed without belief — shoes-under-the-bed knee prayers to the ceiling ("Thinking of it as talking to the ceiling was somehow preferable to imagining talking to Nothing"); Pat: it doesn't matter what he thinks, only what he does; Gene M.'s Subaru-circling Higher-Power eccentricity and the Betty Crocker cake-mix analogy — follow the directions on the box and a cake will result, baking-chemistry comprehension not required (n.197: Gately's never checked a pasta box for directions).
• pp. 467-468: the Removal — riding the 0430 Greenie to clean turds at the Shattuck, he realizes Substances haven't even occurred to him for days; "He was, in a way, Free… out of this kind of mental cage since he was maybe ten"; not gratitude but suspicion; at seven months he cracks the Provident's fake-wood tabletop with his head over the unintelligibility of the thing that is working (n.195: the Financial Amend for the resin).
• p. 468: Ferocious Francis Gehaney in full — oxygen tube, martini-and-naked-lady tatt, Croc epigrams (n.196: "sobriety's like a hard-on…"); over eye-rattling coffee he suggests anything minor-league enough for Gately to understand wouldn't be major-league enough to save his addled ass from the well-dressed Sergeant at Arms.
• p. 469: present tense again — Gately no longer much cares whether he understands; knees twice daily, cleans, listens, tells the truth, helps when asked; the September one-candle cake from the White Flaggers and his first tears in front of nonrelatives (denied: "candle-fumes in his eye").
• pp. 469-470: the cooking comedy — the exceptionless menu (n.197), Gately's anxious-bride face over steaming pans, jailhouse-tatted plate-sized hands; Lenz's and Day's oblique cracks, McDade and Glynn's spaghetti-night routine; Ewell, Cortelyu, and handless Burt F. Smith ("whenever he can get a fork to his mouth") supplying the kindness.

Backward

• Gately's mother's cirrhotic hemorrhage (p. 465) was just narrated in the Gately childhood/memories material at pp. 446-449 (scene 092; note that raw-file 093 opens with its tail) — "Pat M. was never in any way a mother-figure," a denial the book quietly tests.

Forward

• The "Nuck-VIP issue" (pp. 462-463) is the DuPlessis burglary of scene 016-orbit (pp. 55-60): Gately's M.O., the rigged DuPlessis death (cold, bound, mucus), and the federalization under "Non-Specific Services Bureau" (= U.S.O.U.S., Rodney Tine's Unspecified Services) — which means the Office already has Gately's thread in hand, while the A.F.R. independently hunts the burglars who took DuPlessis's effects (and, per their belief, the Master — scenes 097/098). This is the fuse on Gately's whole plot.
• The mandatory-90-day Red-File hanging over him (p. 463) and his terror of Substances, not jail, set the exact stakes of pp. 601-619, scene 120: when the Nucks come for Lenz and Gately takes the .25 slug, and later when he refuses Demerol in the trauma ward (pp. 809, scene 161ff, 885ff) — "Any Lengths" (p. 464) cashed out literally.
• Pat's epileptic dog and stroke story (pp. 464-466) sit in eerie rhyme with the very next scene's Marathe/Steeply talk of epilepsy electrodes and Brandon's pleasure-terminals (scene 096) — treatment of seizures as the cover under which engineered pleasure enters the world.
• Ferocious Francis (p. 468) was established at the White Flag meeting (scene 074, pp. 343-367) and becomes Gately's sponsor-voice through the hospital chapters; the "Sergeant at Arms" figure echoes the White Flag speaker idiom (p. 359 orbit).
• Johnette Foltz's absences (p. 462) matter later: she's on desk duty during the Lenz crisis night and accompanies Joelle; the supper-table roster (Lenz, Day, McDade, Glynn, Ewell, Cortelyu, Burt F. Smith) is the cast of the Ennet House chapters from p. 560 (scene 111) onward.
• The Aventura joyriding and 'Progress Not Perfection' rationalization recur in scene 097, where the drive's wake of trash literally raps on the Antitois' door — Gately's smallest dishonesty knotting him to the A.F.R. plot.

• p. 461: "it's like being strapped into a missile and launched at the site of a domestic errand" — the Aventura rapture; Gately's capacity for joy.
• p. 464: "Gately cringed now only at the thought of the Sergeant at Arms… He'll now go to literally Any Lengths to stay clean." — the conversion's thesis.
• p. 465: "that desire for the shitstorm to end" (with n.192's deadpan "She didn't literally say shitstorm") — Pat's minimal entry-requirement for recovery.
• p. 467: "It didn't matter one fuckola whether Gately like believed a cake would result…" — the Betty Crocker analogy; canonical Boston-AA pragmatism.
• pp. 467-468: "I.e. the Desire and Compulsion had been Removed… He was, in a way, Free." — the Removal passage.
• p. 468: "maybe anything minor-league enough for Don Gately to understand probably wasn't going to be major-league enough to save Gately's addled ass" — Ferocious Francis's koan.
