The named-must liturgy, the theme's body-as-machine doctrine in its purest compression. Schtitt dismisses the players to drill with an anatomy lesson: "You are not arms." In real tennis the arm is drivetrain, not motor — "like wheels of vehicles. Not engine. Legs: not either." The limbs that do the visible work are just the machine's transmission; the engine is the head, and the whole regimen of dawn repetition exists to wire the strokes so deep into the wheels that the engine is free to do the only thing that finally wins — think, see, occur. The body is a vehicle, and Schtitt is telling them where to sit.
