Pat lets Gately in on a P.O.'s lukewarm referral because his very hopelessness — his up-front admission that he only came to dodge jail and doesn't expect to stay clean — is the qualification, not the disqualification. The theme's counterintuitive doctrine is that recovery requires no faith, no resolve, no self-improvement plan, only "grim honesty and hopelessness" and the barest "desire for the shitstorm to end."
