• What: The House's staffing origin, load-bearing for the thread. Gately came to Ennet House "last year" only to stay out of jail on a raft of Bad-Check/Forgery/B&E/Possession issues (and the buried "Nuck-VIP" DuPlessis Murder-2 issue that vanished into a federal "Non-Specific Services Bureau"); Pat Montesian admitted him on grim honesty and hopelessness alone (event 5). Four-plus months of knees-and-ceiling prayer and Gene M.'s Betty Crocker cake-mix analogy later, the Desire and Compulsion were "Removed"; he graduated treatment, took the live-in Staffer's job, and now cooks the dreaded communal suppers, drives Pat's mint-reconditioned black 1964 Ford Aventura on the House's errands, and works the desk. The live-in layer is the institution's whole night shift: two recovered-addict Staffers (Johnette Foltz is the other), room and board and little pay, cooking, the weekly shopping run, coaching applicants at the door, watching brewing resident conflicts — and rotating all-night "Dream Duty" in the front office so somebody's awake when residents surface at 0300 from Substance-dreams.
