Summary

With Gately hospitalized, Johnette Foltz — five consecutive night shifts of Dream Duty, dipping a finger in scalding coffee to stay awake — is writing up the Log at 0830 on 17 Nov when somebody knocks at Ennet House's front door, which only a stranger would do, since the door stands open to all but the Law from 0801. Wary of more suit-wearing police deposing residents about "the Lenz-and-Gately-and-Canadian fuck-up," she instead admits an unnamed upscale kid — frozen showered hair, ironed jeans, blinding-white Nikes, a woolly jacket lettered A.T.E. down the sleeves — who asks, with the burbly oversalivated speech Johnette knows "all too wicked well" as that of somebody who's just put down the pipe or bong, whether he might borrow and Xerox a schedule of local Substance Anonymous meetings, framed in the same "roundabout Denial shit" she hears from toothless street addicts. The class gulf between this whom-saying boy and Johnette Marie Foltz of South Chelsea is total, and yet the kid seems too emotionally depleted even to condescend. The scene closes on retrospective foreboding: much later, "in subsequent events' light," Johnette would clearly recall the melting hair, the whom, and the saliva he fought not to swallow.

What to notice

For the first time since the opening interview, Hal is rendered entirely from outside — and the book never names him, leaving the reader to assemble the identification from jacket letters and diction exactly the way Johnette assembles her read from tells: the knock at a door that is always open, the crease ironed into the jeans, the whom. Notice how thoroughly the third person wears her voice — "and everything like that" recurring like a signature — so that the scene's considerable intelligence is hers and entirely nonverbal, while the boy's flawless grammar carries no information she hasn't already decoded from his spit. The cruelest detail is the choreography of that whom: the word built to signal a whole "planet of privilege" is the one his withdrawal-flooded mouth can barely get out without drooling. And the hair — showered, frozen upright in the cold, then melting in Pat's office "like a slashed tire" so that "his face got bigger" — gives Hal a literally changing face, in a book whose catastrophe is that his face stops transmitting.
