• What: Having admitted him, Pat adopted him: Gately was her biggest favorite among the residents last year. She went personally with him to most of his bigger North Shore court dates, driving him up in the Handicapped-plated Aventura, and threw all of Ennet House's substantial respect and clout behind him with Judges and Boards until every issue that could be resolved without a finding was Blue-Filed. As Staff he now cooks, unlocks her cabinets, prints her unreadable appointments, and runs her errands in the car itself — a privilege the narration rates as both regard and questionable judgment. Gately never quite works out why he got all the extra help; Pat was never in any way a mother-figure for him, which keeps the generosity unexplained rather than familial.
