What: Before recovery Eugenio was a con man and addict: "a one-eared former boiler-room bunko man" (scene 066) — an "ex-coke and -phone-bunko guy whose left ear had been one of his Losses" (scene 095). The lost ear is narrated as one of his addiction "Losses"; the boiler-room / "phone-bunko" work was the telephone-fraud racket he later, with some irony, converted into a legitimate living selling cellular phones (event 2). Gately, meeting him years later, reads the grizzled Eugenio through his own prejudices as seeming somehow "both" Oriental and "spic" at once (event 3).
