Calvin Thrust
Calvin Thrust is Ennet House's toughest-loving counselor: a former New York City porn performer, four years sober, who went through the House himself and now takes "absolutely zero in terms of shit" from the residents he counsels. He reaches the reader almost entirely through Don Gately: as the counselor whose customized Corvette Gately's binoculars dented back in Gately's own residency, as a running presence in the staff apparatus around Pat Montesian, and above all as the man who — on the November night Gately is shot defending Randy Lenz from the Canadians Lenz provoked — arrives, deals with Lenz, and drives the bleeding Gately to St. Elizabeth's in that same beloved Corvette. His one extended in-person scene is the bedside visit afterward, a chapter-length monologue of House news and street-legal analysis delivered over a mute Gately with an unlit cigarette and an air of imminent departure. The porn past is carried mostly in asides — the endnote tracing his "early choice of career" to a cocaine-induced priapism, the rumored tattoo on his "formerly professional porn-cartridge-performer's Unit," the cheap bootleg cartridge Gately once saw — and this page keeps that half of him on its own evidence: nothing in the source text connects Thrust to James O. Incandenza's filmography, and no such connection is recorded here (see Dating notes).
Arc
Every durable fact about Calvin Thrust is a before/after hinge: the cocaine that gave "former cokehead Calvin Thrust" the priapism that "led directly to his early choice of career" (1); the methadone-clinic side door through which "Calvin T. and Danielle S. had both originally gotten into Ennet House" (2); the rumored tattoo that spells out his whole name only under conditions his old profession paid for (5). The novel never dramatizes his using days or his residency — by the time the reader meets him he is already the finished article, "four years sober and a former NYC porn actor who'd gone through the House himself," introduced in the same breath as his two present-tense loves: taking "absolutely zero in terms of shit" and the customized 'Vette (3). The porn past never gets a title, a studio, or a director; it survives as epithet, endnote etiology, a rumor Ewell declines to check, and one low-lit bootleg cartridge Gately is 98% sure about — a career reduced to apparatus, which is exactly where this page leaves it.
As a counselor he is the House's designated blunt instrument, and the timeline's middle stretch is a catalogue of the method: pissing Green off weekly on the theory that anger is at least a signal from a shut-down man, assigning McDade gratitude, carrying a discharged resident bodily to the T-stop (4, 6). The crisis night is the method's real test, and the text is careful about what passed and what didn't: pegging Lenz instantly, summoning "every Oreida of self-control sobriety'd blessed him with," the controlled ultimatum in the Disabled Bedroom — and then the honest accounting afterward, told to Pat unprompted, that the controlled ultimatum was also a mercy to himself: he moved Lenz out the door "because otherwise he was afraid that he (Thrust) was going to eliminate Lenz's map on the spot, out of rage" (7). Joelle takes his inventory for it and this page doesn't rule between them; what it can say is that the man whose pride and joy took a binocular dent in event 3 loaded a bleeding Gately across its new-and-dear upholstery without hesitating, and rated the blood "the least of the problems" (7).
His one long scene is a portrait of committed presence that can't stop performing imminent absence: the backwards chair, the lit gasper as "psychic ballast" — without one going he is "only technically" wherever he is — the "air of imminent departure about him, like a man whose beeper was about to sound" (8) — and yet he is there, visit after visit implied by the chair Day and Ferocious Francis later inherit (9), carrying the entire House to Gately one resident at a time and doing what passes, given that "most of Calvin Thrust's legality-experience was filmic and petty-vice," for legal counsel: find the Item (8). The last we hear, he is leaving Gately's bedside for the memorial of a man from his own House cohort who stayed sober four years and then went off a pier — the counselor's arc closing on the fate he is four years past himself, as printed, unresolved (8). Gately finds him insufferable and is less conscious of the pain when he's there. Both halves are true.

Scenes that only seem to mention Thrust. The surname is also an ordinary English verb and noun, and the first name is also half of a clothing brand, so a case-blind search drowns in false friends. Lowercase "thrust/thrusts/thruster/thrusting" occurs fifteen times across fourteen source texts, never meaning the man; the following are NOT cited in any event's Scene(s) on the strength of those matches:
- 005 — "was the thrust" (the gist of what Orin says).
- 026 — "Schtitt's thrust" (his pedagogical point).
- 049 — "yank, pull, shove, thrust" and "a shover and a thruster" (Himself's father on bodies, twice).
- 094 — "if I got your thrust" (conversational drift).
- 097 — the A.F.R. toothbrush "thrust farther in rhythmically" (the scene IS cited in event 6, but for its Calvin T. sentence, not this).
- 116 — "gluteal-thruster squat-and-kick" (a passing drunk; scene cited in event 6 for its real material).
- 149 — "kicks and thrusts of martial arts."
- 150 — "an emotional thrust" (film criticism).
- 162 — "reverse thrust on a young self's fall" (the wraith on entertainment; scene cited in event 9 for its real material).
- 163 — Broullîme "thrust into technical trouble-killing."

"Calvin" that is not Calvin. Two scenes carry the first name only as the brand Calvin Klein: 100 ("James-River-Traders-wearing-Calvin-Klein-aftershave-smelling-goofy-ass" — Roy Tony to Erdedy) and 179 ("Calvin Klein-brand Pheromonic Musk"). Neither is cited. No Calvinism/Calvinist-type strings turned up anywhere in the source texts. One genuine first-name-only attestation IS cited: scene 120's "Call Pat's machine and Calvin" — identified as Thrust by the staff context (the on-call list alongside Pat) and by scene 161's retelling of who then arrived; recorded with that basis.
The initialism "C.T." is never Thrust. Roughly twenty-eight files (001, 003, 005, 010, 026, 034, 036, 041, 053, 057, 064, 068, 071, 094, 102, 117, 122, 126, 135, 154, 155, 157, 165, 167, 170, 172, 179; n096, n098, n110, n266, n316) use "C.T." — that is Charles Tavis, E.T.A.'s Headmaster, throughout. The source texts abbreviate Calvin Thrust only as "Calvin T." (097, 116, 118, 161, n248), never "C.T." The one "CT" string that IS Thrust is the rumored tattoo's flaccid-state initials (5) — on his Unit, not in prose reference.
That leaves 13 source texts with genuine Calvin-Thrust material, all cited: scenes 054, 056, 074, 097, 116, 118, 120, 161, 162, 169, and endnotes n193, n232, n248.
Dating / identity puzzles:
- The "four years sober" clash (events 3 and 8): scene 054, set in "the very early part of" Gately's residency (~YDPAH per Gately's own timeline), calls Thrust "four years sober"; scene 161, in Nov YDAU — roughly a year later — again gives "four years sober" ("Calvin Thrust, four years sober, straddling the backwards chair"), and the same scene has the drowned man who "had gone through the House back when Thrust did and had stayed sober in AA for four solid years." Both stamps are carried as printed; the tension is not resolved (round-number looseness is one possible reading, but this page settles nothing). Event 2's "~4 years before YDAU" bracket inherits this softness.
- The Incandenza-filmography question (1): an earlier working note in this archive described Thrust as a former performer in James O. Incandenza's filmography, with credits in the filmography endnote (n.24). The source texts do not support this: n024 contains no "Calvin" or "Thrust" string; its pornography-adjacent credits are pseudonymous ('Hugh G. Rection,' 'Bunny Day,' 'Taffy Appel' in Möbius Strips; 'Hugh G. Rection' again in (At Least) Three Cheers for Cause and Effect), and nothing in any source text links Thrust to those names, to Incandenza, or to any titled film. Every "cocktail" in the book (5, 045, 065, 165) is a drink or a cocktail dress. The bootleg cartridge Gately remembers (161) carries no company, director, or title. No JOI connection is recorded here; two independent censuses of the source texts reached the same finding — the claim did not survive.
- Events 3 and 4 (dating via Gately's residency): scenes 054 and 074 carry no datelines; both events are dated relative to Gately's residency chronology, with the ~YDPAH anchor imported from the audited Gately page rather than attested in these scenes directly. Flagged as an imported anchor.
- Counselor vs. staffer (3, 5): the source texts style Thrust "the counselor" / "one of the Ennet House counselors" (054), "Ennet House alumnus and volunteer counselor" (056), and Green's "Ennet House counselor" (116). No source text calls him a live-in staffer; the live-in Staffers named in the book are Gately, Johnette Foltz, and (in 056) "Current female live-in Staffer Johnette Foltz" — Thrust arrives at the House by car (054) and is summoned from off-site on the crisis night (120). His title is recorded here as the source texts give it: alumnus and volunteer counselor.
- Scene 161's retelling (7): everything between Thrust's arrival and the E.R. reaches the reader as Thrust's own bedside narration, days after the fact, to a listener who cannot ask questions; it is the book's only account of those hours and is carried as his report, not as settled fact.
- The tattoo (5): carried in-text only as a quiet rumor that Ewell "has soberly elected to let... go unsubstantiated"; recorded as rumor, not fact.
