Summary

A two-page geographic essay on Enfield MA, the invented township that is "one of the stranger little facts that make up the idea that is metro Boston": an arm-shaped municipality composed almost entirely of medical, corporate, and spiritual facilities, its tax rolls a deadpan list running from St. Elizabeth's Hospital to the Empire Waste Displacement catapult facility. The scene then climbs E.T.A.'s shaved hilltop and surveys what the Academy overlooks: Commonwealth Avenue's climb from Lower Brighton squalor to Newton gentrification eastward, Sunstrand's annular power grid and the E.W.D. smokestacks with their giant ATHSCME fans blowing the Concavity-bound effluent due north, and — down the hill's steepest, best-planted decline — the decaying grounds of Enfield Marine. The passage is the book's master map, physically locating E.T.A. above Ennet House and the waste-economy machinery in one sightline.

What to notice

The governing joke is anatomical: a township composed almost entirely of hospitals is itself rendered as a body — an arm with an elbow, ribs, a fist "sunk into Allston", E.T.A. perched on a "raised cyst" — the map presenting metro Boston's medical district as a patient with a growth. The tax-roll catalog flattens sacred, corporate, and clinical into one comma-series (the Svelte Nail Co. rubbing shoulders with a Discalced monastery), deadpan bookkeeping doing the world-building. And notice the acclimatized ear the prose confesses to: the giant fans' "insistent high-pitched fury" is "somehow soothing, aurally, at E.T.A.'s distance and height" — the waste-economy's scream become the academy's white noise, dread made ambient in exactly the way the book keeps saying entertainment works.

Beats — page-by-page

  • pp. 240-241: Enfield anatomized as an arm: "its elbow nudging East Newton's ribs and its fist sunk into Allston"; the tax-base catalog (St. Elizabeth's, Universal Bleacher, Shuco-Mist, Enfield Marine, ATHSCME "Family of Air-Displacement Effectuators," the E.T.A., a Discalced monastery, etc.).
  • p. 241: Empire Waste Displacement's catapult facility — les trebuchets noirs, block-long catapults flinging twine-bundled waste-vehicles 5+ km. into "the subannular regions of the Great Concavity," with slide-back roof and tolerated-not-encouraged school tours.
  • p. 241: E.T.A. itself: the hilltop "raised cyst on the township's elbow" balded and shaved flat ten years back; 75 hectares, 32 asphalt + 16 Har-Tru courts, underground facilities, artful plantings.
  • pp. 241-242: The eastward view: Comm. Ave.'s "acclivated migration" from Lower Brighton (tenements, Brighton Project high-rises with three-story orange I.D. numerals, leather-clad pale gangs, the Green Line's quarter-hourly trundle) up through B.C. to Newton and Heartbreak Hill; the sun setting "fifteen minutes to the nanosecond after deLint turns on the courts' high-tower lights."
  • p. 242: To the (I-think) southwest: Sunstrand's transformers and the Ø-laden signs warning of annular-generated amps underground ("going up like a Kleenex in the fireplace"); E.W.D. smokestacks with ATHSCME 2100-Series fans blowing due north, their fury "somehow soothing, aurally, at E.T.A.'s distance and height."
  • p. 242: The closing sightline: from the north and northeast tree-lines "E.T.A. looks down its hill's steepest, best-planted decline into the complexly decaying grounds of Enfield Marine."

Themes in this scene

  • Annularity: the township's economy is literally annular — annular-generated amps underground, waste catapulted north into the Concavity, fans pushing the airborne effluvia after it; the cycle's infrastructure is Enfield's skyline.
  • Nationalism and O.N.A.N.: E.W.D. is "O.N.A.N.-subsidized"; the Québecois name for the catapults (les trebuchets noirs) and the due-north vector make experialism a daily municipal noise.
  • The Body and Tennis: E.T.A. as a purpose-built body-machine campus — the shaved hill, the court counts, the underground training facilities — physically elevated above the institutions of damage (hospitals, halfway houses) it will keep supplying.

Connections — backward & forward

Backward

  • Completes the map begun in scene 054 (Enfield Marine's units, Ennet House): the last sentence's downhill sightline is the novel's central architecture — E.T.A. literally looks down on Ennet House, and the Hal/Gately convergence is a walk down this slope.
  • The E.W.D. catapult launch is heard mid-cook by Joelle in the previous scene (p. 237, scene 062, the "bulky thump" and brown package arcing north) — the same machinery from inside and outside.

Forward

  • ATHSCME fans and the due-north blowing recur in the Marathe/Steeply serial and n.304's Concavity lore; "les trebuchets noirs" anticipates the Québecois optic on U.S. waste-flinging.
  • Heartbreak Hill and Comm. Ave. ground later pedestrian episodes (Lenz's and Gately's walks; the Professional Building of Hal's grief-therapist, scene 064, is "right up Comm. Ave. past the Sunstrand Plaza," p. 252).
  • The 1st-person flicker ("To I think it must be the southwest") matches other Hal-narrated expository sections (e.g. the Ennet House founding material), suggesting Hal as the book's intermittent encyclopedist. (The "I" is confirmed in print, p. 241.)
  • The tax-base roster is a who's-lived-here index of the cast (cross-keys, several via Carlisle): the Brighton Project high-rises = Wardine/Clenette's and Roy Tony's territory (scenes 008/040); Allston, where the fist is sunk = Pemulis's origin (scene 048); Newton, ribs nudged = Kate Gompert's hometown (scene 024); Leisure Time Ice = Bruce Green's steady job, held into YDAU (scene 010, p. 40; still driving in 066/116); the Provident Nursing Home = the White Flag meeting hall (scene 074); St. Elizabeth's = the BLTN group "two blocks down" from Ennet House (scene 056) and Gately's entire trauma-wing endgame (scenes 161+).
  • The National Cranio-Facial Pain Foundation in the roster is the N.C.-F.P.F. of Sixties Bob (Whitey Sorkin's migrainologist, pp. 927-931) — and Schacht interns in pain-management (scene 065 range); the A.F.R.'s tortured "cranio-facial-pain-specialist" closes the loop. A throwaway tax line that seeds the Fackelmann finale's medical underworld.

Notable passages (4)

  • p. 240: "Enfield MA is one of the stranger little facts that make up the idea that is metro Boston" — facts vs. ideas diction, echoing Joelle's facts/abstraction spiral one page earlier.
  • p. 241: the E.W.D. catapult description ("a sound like a giant stamping foot… catcher's mitts from hell") — set-piece for the annularity anthology.
  • p. 242: the Sunstrand warning signs "talking with many Ø's about how many annular-generated amps are waiting underground for anyone who digs… going up like a Kleenex in the fireplace" — annular power as buried danger; resonant against the grave-digging endgame.
  • p. 242: "E.T.A. looks down its hill's steepest, best-planted decline into the complexly decaying grounds of Enfield Marine" — the novel's two worlds in one sentence of topography.
