"looks down" into "the complexly decaying grounds of Enfield Marine" — the VA-hospital complex that houses Ennet House, the halfway facility at the bottom of the hill. The academy is physically raised above the institutions of breakdown, addiction, and recovery it will, over a lifetime of ruined bodies and burnt-out prospects, keep feeding. The hill is a hierarchy: the manufacture of promising athletic bodies on top, the sorting-house for the ones the machine uses up literally downhill.
