Summary

The novel's skeleton key, dropped without comment between the two halves of Joelle's walk: "CHRONOLOGY OF ORGANIZATION OF NORTH AMERICAN NATIONS' REVENUE-ENHANCING SUBSIDIZED TIME™, BY YEAR," followed by the nine subsidized years in order, from the Year of the Whopper through the Year of Glad. It is the first place the reader can fix the book's scrambled chronology — YDAU is year eight of nine — and n.78 adds the punchline that even the final year's name is still just a pending endorsement contract (Glad Flaccid Receptacle Corp., ratification due 15 December YDAU), time itself sold but not yet closed.

What to notice

Read the nine names and a body's story hides in the ad inventory: the Whopper leads and the Tucks Medicated Pad follows immediately — ingestion answered by hemorrhoids inside two years — with incontinence (Depend) and disposal (Glad) at the close — the sponsored calendar accidentally spelling out consumption's whole digestive tragedy, ending in a trash bag. The list's one editorial flinch is the "(sic)" tucked into the unpronounceable Yushityu year: the document fusses over grammar while registering no objection to time carrying a trademark. And Glad is the book's blackest year-name — the year in which the novel opens on Hal unable to make himself understood is named for a bag you seal garbage in, with a smile hiding in the word.

  • n.78's only suspense is already settled by the frame: scene 001 takes place in the Year of Glad, so the reader holds the proof that the 15-Dec ratification went through (Carlisle's closure-point, worth carrying).
