the grief-therapy call: playing out of your head, The Zone
It’s just like that magical feeling on those rare days out there playing. Playing out of your head, deLint calls it. Loach calls it The Zone. Being in The Zone. Those days when you feel perfectly calibrated.
Context
The scene's whole engine is a comic transposition: Hal is only clipping toenails into a distant wastebasket, but the can't-miss streak lets him name the athletic state exactly. The Zone gets its E.T.A. nomenclature here — "Playing out of your head, deLint calls it. Loach calls it The Zone" — the rare calibrated day when the body just delivers and the self barely has to be involved. It is the flow-state the whole regimen chases, described from the inside by the academy's most articulate diagnostician of his own game.
