Marathe's defection: the secession-timing calculus — when to jump — "it may be far wiser of…"

The defection made a matter of political timing: Marathe's knowledge "would be comfortably rewarded once Notre Rai Pays seceded" to "draw down the wrath of chanteur-fou Gentle's anger" — his welcome by O.N.A.N. depends on the A.F.R. strategy (145) actually succeeding, on Québec being "evicted." So the calculus is when to reveal "his quadrupling for O.N.A.N.": too early and he is useless, too late and Fortier's "wrath would be implacable." Marathe's private betrayal runs on the same secession-schedule as Fortier's public war; the traitor and the true believer are timing the same event from opposite ends.
