A.F.R. agent Rémy Marathe, executing Fortier's halfway-house canvass, sits veiled and blanket-lapped in Ennet House's group-intake living room (machine pistol holstered to his right stump), reciting his rehearsed addict's line on forged credentials ("The Chit Chat Farms Rehabilitation of Pennsylvania State" — records arranged by the A.F.R.'s Montreal data liaison) and absorbing the "metal people" cosmology of the intake-night regular Pat calls Selwyn. In Pat Montesian's intake interview he runs his Henri-the-Swiss legend — and, while Pat rummages in her black cabinet, spots among the stacked entertainment cartridges two plain brown cases blank except for "tiny round faces of embossed smiles": possible copies of the Entertainment, sitting in a halfway-house cabinet. The scene also documents how such a thing could get there: the House runs on donations, and the cabinet's cartridges include "donie-cartridges" carried down from E.T.A. that very afternoon by resident Clenette H. for Staff to screen — a live pipeline from the auteur's own academy into Pat's cabinet (153). Pat, unfazed by the veil, mentions the House's U.H.I.D. member in early residency (Joelle — the performer both his masters want) and offers Marathe the office Convertisofa for the night, forcing his four-way calculus (153).
