care bounded by the rules of the House

quote

She used the last of the room’s Kleenex dusting all five bedside tables, wiping in careful rings around objects she wasn’t to touch.

Context

Even the compulsion is now fenced by communal-living rules: she cleans everyone's table but wipes in careful rings around the possessions she isn't permitted to handle, the ritual made effortful and considerate at once. Recovery domesticates the drive — the same hands that once cleaned behind refrigerators at 0400 now work within boundaries, tending the shared room without trespassing on what isn't hers.
