"Do not underestimate objects": Ortho Stice and the moving bed

What: Ortho ("The Darkness") Stice, 16-A's top man, is being driven "right to the edge" because he wakes with his bed moved against a different wall despite chairs, ball-can alarms, and a jammed door — his three explanations ascending in grimness (he's sleep-telekinetic; someone else is telekinetic and hates him; he's a severe somnambulist). Waving off Stice's past mockery (the Krazy-Glued buttock, the diet cracks), Lyle preaches: "Do not underestimate objects... The world, after all, which is radically old, is made up mostly of objects," and tells the parable of the man who earned a living betting he could stand on a chair and lift it off the ground while standing on it — leaving crowds "still staring up at an object he had not underestimated."
