When such kids defiantly set the shoulder-pull heavier than their own body weight, "lo: the overweighted shoulder-pull becomes a chin-up" — up they rise toward the bar they meant to pull down, and Lyle just smiles, "hiding his tongue" (scene 039; note the moral of his own maxim, event 1). A mundane skeptics' theory is floated too: Axford jokes that Pemulis's newly acquired incredibly-potent DMZ "stumbled on a possible explanation for poor old Lyle and his lotus position" (scene 057) — i.e. maybe he's just high.
