The D.E.A. had lost four field researchers and a consultant before they’d bowed to the intractable problems involved in trying to have somebody view the confiscated Tempe cartridge and articulate the thing’s lethal charms. The strongest possible language had been necessary to restrain a certain Famous Crooner from attempting a personal review of the thing’s qualities.
Context
Film reviewing as lethal occupation: the state's problem is that describing this film requires watching it, and watching it is terminal — "view… and articulate" is the whole critical act, and it costs the D.E.A. five people before they give up. Even the Famous Crooner (Johnny Gentle, the entertainer-president) has to be restrained from "a personal review." Directly answers Marathe's question in the adjacent installment (098): who can study the Entertainment while detached? Nobody.
