Read-Only cartridges — the copyright tech that becomes the samizdat's hinge

• When: a standing engineering fact of the InterLace order — designed in by Lace-Forché from the founding (event 5); undated in-scene
• What: Having "absorbed the litigatory lessons" of the music- and video-piracy wars in her M.B.A. program, Noreen Lace-Forché protected InterLace's golden goose by specifying that every consumer-TP-compatible laser cartridge be engineered Read-Only: a copyable Master requires special OS-codes and special hardware (both licensed), and — crucially — "Masters have to be run at 585 r.p.m. instead of a consumer-TP's cartridge-drive's 450 r.p.m." (n301). This purely commercial anti-piracy architecture is what makes the buried Master of the Entertainment the endgame object: a Read-Only copy cannot be duplicated and disseminated, only viewed to death; only a 585-rpm Master can flood the grid. It also shapes the search — a Master's "unique case and slightly larger size" would have made even the dim Antitoi brothers set it aside and rig the special hardware (n303), which is how Fortier and Broullîme reason that no Master was in their shop.
