Hal, Mario, and the Moms’s sadness — "Now she’s just an agoraphobic workaholic…"

Hal's rebuttal to the happier-mother reading reframes the whole transformation as symptom. Yes she stopped travelling, yes she seems better — but "now she never goes anywhere," "never leaves the grounds," confined to "the Headmaster's House and her office and the tunnel in between," "a worse workaholic than she ever was. And more obsessive-compulsive." What Mario reads as happification Hal reads as enclosure: the death didn't free Avril, it collapsed her world to the sealed circuit of house-tunnel-office, the dustlessness ("When's the last time you saw a dust-mote in that house?") the sign of a control-need with nowhere left to go. The same facts support opposite verdicts, which is the family's permanent condition — every observation about Avril readable as either recovery or pathology, and no way to settle which.
