- Avril Incandenza
Avril Incandenza (the Moms, Mrs. I., Dr. Incandenza) is JOI's widow and
E.T.A.'s co-founder and academic dean, mother to Orin, Mario, and Hal.
- Don Gately
Don Gately (Gately; called "Bimmy" and "Doshka" in his using days,
later just "Donny," and once middle-initialed "D. W. Gately" at p. 933)
is a large recovering Demerol addict and live-in staffer at Ennet House.
- Hal Incandenza
Hal Incandenza ("Halation," "the Halster") is the youngest of the three
Incandenza sons and the novel's central figure, a gifted E.T.A. junior.
- Hugh Steeply
Hugh Steeply (Steeply; undercover as "Helen Steeply," a journalist from
Moment magazine) is a U.S. Office of Unspecified Services field agent;
most prominent in the mountainside talks with Marathe (scene 029 onward).
- James O. Incandenza
James O. Incandenza (JOI, "Himself," the Mad Stork, the Sad Stork) is
the Incandenza patriarch and founder of E.T.A.; after his death he
returns as the wraith.
- Joelle van Dyne
Joelle van Dyne (Madame Psychosis, the P.G.O.A.T. or "Prettiest Girl of
All Time"; "Lucille Duquette" in Molly Notkin's mistaken account,
p. 795) is a veiled radio host and former partner of
Orin and muse of JOI; most prominent hosting the Madame Psychosis show
(scene 053).
- Mario Incandenza
Mario Incandenza (Booboo) is the middle Incandenza son, physically
disabled and the family's tender documentarian; most prominent behind
the camera at E.T.A. (scene 015).
- Michael Pemulis
Michael Pemulis (Pemulis, "the Peemster," Mike; "M. M. Pemulis," p. 154)
is an E.T.A. student, the academy's resident drug dealer and hustler;
most prominent acquiring the DMZ (scene 050).
- Orin Incandenza
Orin Incandenza (O., the punter) is the eldest Incandenza son, a
professional football punter who left tennis; he fields Avril's mail
under the fictitious persona "Jethro Bodine" (n.110, pp. 1007, 1015).
- Rémy Marathe
Rémy Marathe (Marathe; Ennet House intake alias "Henri" the Swiss) is a
wheelchair-bound A.F.R. operative and quadruple agent; most prominent in
the long desert colloquies with Steeply (scene 029 onward).
The academy on the hill: E.T.A.'s players, coaches, and staff.
- Ortho Stice — 15 scenes
Ortho Stice ("The Darkness") is an E.T.A. junior from Kansas whose dorm
furniture starts moving on its own; most prominent stuck to a window that
Hal finds him fused to (scene 167), and in the Stice-vs-Hal exhibition
match (scenes 125-127).
- Jim Troeltsch — 14 scenes
Jim Troeltsch (Troeltsch) is an E.T.A. student and aspiring sports
broadcaster; most prominent staying in bed sick (scene 018).
- John Wayne — 14 scenes
John Wayne (Wayne) is E.T.A.'s top-ranked player, a stoic Canadian junior
(#1 at the academy).
- Charles Tavis — 12 scenes
Charles Tavis (C.T., Uncle Charles) is E.T.A.'s headmaster and Avril's
kin, whose exact relation to her wobbles across the book from half-brother
(p. 3) to adoptive brother (p. 50).
- Jim Struck — 11 scenes
Jim Struck (Struck; full name James Albrecht Lockley Struck Jr., n.304)
is an E.T.A. student who plagiarizes Geoffrey Day's A.F.R. article for a
term paper.
- Ted Schacht — 11 scenes
Ted Schacht (Schacht) is an E.T.A. student, an even-tempered player with a
knee problem and an interest in dentistry.
- Aubrey deLint — 9 scenes
Aubrey deLint (deLint) is an E.T.A. coach and prorector, Schtitt's
right-hand man on the courts.
- Gerhardt Schtitt — 9 scenes
Gerhardt Schtitt is E.T.A.'s head coach, an old-world Austrian who
theorizes tennis as a discipline of the self.
- Trevor Axford — 9 scenes
Trevor Axford (Axhandle, Axford) is an E.T.A. student and one of Pemulis's
closer friends.

Graham Rader (Rader, "Yardguard," n.324) is an E.T.A. student.

K. D. Coyle (full name Kyle Dempsy Coyle, p. 941) is an E.T.A. 18's
player, a "kind of mentally slow" #3 singles.
- LaMont Chu — 7 scenes
LaMont Chu (Chu) is a younger E.T.A. student who confides his craving for
tennis fame to Lyle; most prominent talking with Mario and Avril (scene
154).
- Tall Paul Shaw — 7 scenes
Tall Paul Shaw (Shaw) is an E.T.A. student, a recurring background
presence across the locker-room and drill scenes (scenes 032, 034, 094).
- Todd Possalthwaite — 7 scenes
Todd Possalthwaite ("Postal Weight") is a young E.T.A. student who breaks
his nose and takes to wearing a protective clip.

marijuana addict; most prominent in the hospital after a suicide attempt
