Who Mailed the Samizdat
Summary
This file scores four questions the novel refuses to answer out loud: who mailed the lethal samizdat cartridges; whether Orin breaks under the A.F.R.'s roach interrogation; how Joelle's story ends; and whether Marathe survives the endgame as the Québécois-accented "woman" in an emergency room beside Hal.
Who mailed the Entertainment? The community's majority answer — Orin — comes out on top, at favored, the tier for "best explanation of the cited pages, with live counter-evidence remaining." What survives for Orin: the package's physical signature is a private hand in suburban Phoenix, Orin's city; a stated mail-hater has unexplained post-office business, twice attested in one phone call, in a month the mailing campaign is demonstrably still running; both hostile intelligence services spend their endgames acting on the conclusion that the auteur's athlete relative supplied and could source copies — and Orin is the only athlete relative; and the institutional candidates are eliminated on the page for the April mailing (the A.F.R.'s scheme is still "proposed" in April and it has no usable copy until November; USOUS's own dossier says it learned of the tape only after the first victim). What holds Orin below anything stronger: nobody is ever shown mailing anything — the sender's point of view is withheld across the whole novel — no page explains where Orin would have gotten copies, and in November he's still spelling "samizdat" to Hal as a word he can't find in the dictionary and asking how the film got made. The named rivals land lower but two stay genuinely live at open: Avril (the package is keyed to her husband's death-day, the first victim possibly her own ex-lover, and she is in the tiny named circle who knows where the master cartridges really are — but she's the book's canonical agoraphobe, and no page shows her mailing anything) and the will/lawyer mechanism (the book's own filmography carries a minority listing that the film was "privately distributed … through posthumous provisions in the filmmaker's will," and JOI's attorney demonstrably executed exactly this kind of posthumous occasion-timed package once — the Bolex camera — but the listing is a minority of one inside a self-doubting apparatus). USOUS-test-screenings and Pemulis-via-the-optics-scholarship are strained; the nobody-mailed-anything reading is contradicted (somebody licked that First Class postage). On top of the tiers, this ledger makes a formal finding the opposing camps themselves converged on: the text engineers the sender's unidentifiability — the undecidable-by-design flag is applied to the sender question. The single best exhibit is one neither camp wanted: the book's only credited forensic conclusion places the "likely dissemination-point someplace along the U.S. north border" — pointing at a sender-region no argued theory occupies. Within the engineered ambiguity, Orin reads with markedly the least strain.
Does Orin break? favored — but this was already ruled: the prior ending-cluster adjudication graded the tumbler scene as surrender-shaped collapse with the actual divulgence only pattern-grade, the scene cut before any answer. This ruling adds no counter-evidence and one deflating bound: even a total break yields almost nothing new, because the location Orin actually holds ("St.-Quelquechose Quebec or something") was already handed to a U.S. operative for free weeks earlier, and the casket-fact is knowledge the text explicitly fences outside him. What he divulged and what happened to him afterward stay open under the already-applied design flag — the author's own ration card promises "little but hints about Orin," and hints are what the record delivers.
How does Joelle end? favored, for what the text actually carries: at the record's stop she is free — released by USOUS, walking home past the idling Sheriff's car, then present (by her veil, never by name) at an AA meeting. Not taken; also not safe: her release is bait by her own uncorrected reading ("they'd let her loose just to see where she'd go"), and the watch on her is still idling at the curb when her thread stops. Two decorations are stripped from the registered wording: "In Here" appears nowhere in her last scene (it is Boston-AA idiom from a Gately scene 600 pages earlier), and "walks past the police car to a meeting" fuses two separate scenes. Both are repaired in the theory record.
Does Marathe survive as the ER "woman"? The theory as registered is defeated by its own exhibit: Hal remembers the accented woman from "almost exactly one year back" — November of YDAU, a month when Marathe's being alive is not in question — not the Year-of-Glad ER. The recorded wording is repaired, not tiered. For the corrected claim (Marathe alive days-to-weeks past the record's stop, in a degrading USOUS disguise), the identification is a chain with no attested link — strained — and the honest verdict on Marathe's fate is open: his last personal scene ends on a literally unanswered question, his last dated scene mid-operation, his betrayal-decision stated and never discharged. The text cuts his thread exactly where it cuts everyone's.
No skeptic disposition is overruled: all 44 item rulings, the struck clause, and all six collision rulings are adopted. Where this ledger goes further, it is to settle the contested passages that were left open — ruling explicitly which side each one actually favors (Q-1, Q-2, and one blind spot) — and those rulings are argued in place.
