He spends the scene with "his combat boots up on one of the standing ashtrays," tilting not quite enough for Gately to tell him to watch out, please; the other floor ashtray by his chair holds bitten nail-parings Gately later realizes are "too big to be from fingernails" — a toenail mystery the text leaves comically unattributed (carried unresolved).
