• What: When the beef Lenz provoked with the three Canadians leaves Gately shot and bleeding on the E.M.P.H.H. street, Gately's triage instruction to the veiled Joelle names him: "Call Pat's machine and Calvin. You have to dial 9. Tell them to come down." What Thrust did on arrival reaches the reader through his own bedside retelling (event 8's frame): he and the House Manager "immediately on arrival pegged Lenz as either coked up or 'drined to the gills on some 'drine"; Thrust summoned "every Oreida of self-control sobriety'd blessed him with," took Lenz into the Disabled Bedroom, and "real controlledly" gave him the choice of "voluntarily resigning his Ennet residency on the spot or submitting to a spot-urine and a room-search and everything like that," plus questioning by the police — and Lenz decamped into the urban night. Meanwhile Gately lay bleeding on Pat's office couch; Pat, arriving, "screamed rather unserenely at Thrust for not having already rikky-ticked Don Gately over to St. E.'s on his own already"; Thrust "maneuvered his beloved Corvette up as close to Gately as possible," they heaved Gately's dead weight across the back seat — all available hands, "even Burt F.S.'s stumps" — and Thrust drove him to St. Elizabeth's E.R. with Pat running interference in her Aventura, then "babbled something about a chain-saw" to the E.R. crew while Pat nodded furiously (the gunshot going unnamed). Gately's blood ruined the new-and-dear upholstery of the 'Vette; Thrust "said not to worry about it": "the fucking blood was the least of the problems." In the waiting room Joelle "tried to take Thrust's inventory for letting Randy L. resign and decamp" before his part in Gately's legal trouble could be nailed down, and Thrust told Pat the truth about his tactics: "he'd encouraged Lenz to rikky-tick out of there because otherwise he was afraid that he (Thrust) was going to eliminate Lenz's map on the spot, out of rage."
