The bedside monologue: House sit-rep and street-legal analysis over a mute Gately — Thrust's one extended appearance

pivotal · ?/12-15 Nov YDAU

  • When: ?/12-15 Nov YDAU (scene-161 dateline), in Gately's St. Elizabeth's Trauma Wing room; Thrust must leave for a memorial service "today"
  • What: Thrust's only extended in-person scene: straddling a backwards chair at Gately's bedside, unlit cigarette in hand, breath of "smoke and old scrambled eggs," he delivers a chapter-length one-way report to a Gately who cannot speak — the whole Lenz-night aftermath (event 7), then a full House sit-rep (Thrale vanished, Minty's write-ups, Gompert missing, Belbin's indictment, Foss's graduation, the limbo-injured new man Dave K., Treat's T-cell count, Hanley's impounded brownies), then the legal landscape: the residents' depositions "look to be basically 110% behind Don Gately," but "rather weirder Federal guys with goofy-looking archaic crew cuts" have been in the House, and the missing .44 — "the alleged Item" — is, in Thrust's view, "the thing that makes the difference" between self-defense and a huge beef; he advises Gately "to ransack his brain and mind for where and with who he last saw the alleged gun." The narration steps back twice to fix the man himself: "Most of Calvin Thrust's legality-experience was filmic and petty-vice"; and "Unless he actually had a lit gasper going, Calvin Thrust always has this way of being only technically wherever he was. There was always this air of imminent departure about him, like a man whose beeper was about to sound." He is "four years sober" (as printed — see Dating notes), hair "always combed straight back like a mobster," with "the beginning of chins" from having "discovered fine dining in sobriety," a "more or less permanent sore on his upper lip"; he leaves for the memorial service of a man who'd gone through the House "back when Thrust did" and drowned off the Fort Point pier after four sober years. Gately finds him "insufferable and wishes he'd just fucking go already," yet the pain recedes while somebody's there — the visit's double register: exasperating, and faithful.
