What Happened to Hal

Summary

The question. What destroyed Hal Incandenza? In the Year of Glad he is lucid inside and monstrous outside — he speaks and the world hears animal noise. The candidate mechanisms — all of them live in the community record: the ghost of his father dosed his toothbrush with the super-hallucinogen DMZ that Pemulis had stashed in a dorm ceiling (the internet's classic answer); Hal dosed himself, knowing DMZ beats the urine screen he was facing; Pemulis dosed him; Hal's own body brewed a DMZ-like compound out of the mold he ate as a child (Schmidt's Mold Theory); or there was no drug at all — what we watch is marijuana withdrawal in a secretly dependent, anhedonic boy, escalating exactly as the book says such withdrawal escalates.

The answer this adjudication reached: the no-drug reading wins the comparison — graded "favored," one tier below the top grades — while the crux as a whole carries a formal finding that the book is engineered so the question cannot be finally closed. The famous wraith-on-the-toothbrush answer comes out strained. The self-dose variant — quietly the strongest exogenous-dose reading in the archive — stays open. Pemulis-as-doser is strained. The Mold Theory stays open, capped there by the manuscript history of its one indispensable scene (and, after cross-examination, it would no longer rise past open even without the cap).

Why the withdrawal reading wins: it is the only theory whose causal chain is complete on the page. The narration itself states Hal's withdrawal physiology 700 pages early (the spit, the nausea, the watering eyes — "some rebound effect from B. Hope's desiccating action"), then delivers exactly that syndrome, scaled up, across five scenes and three points of view in the endgame; the narration on 17 November attributes Hal's worsening head to the quit in nearly so many words ("The issue's the horrific way his head's felt, increasingly, since he abruptly Abandoned All Hope"); Hal predicts his own public flying-apart "at Tucson … in front of all these people who knew Himself" the week he quits, and the novel's opening chapter is that prediction kept; and the decline — including the face-uncoupled-from-feeling symptom that defines the Year-of-Glad horror — is visible to a stranger on the evening of 19 November (scene 170), before the only on-page window in which anyone could have dosed him.

Why the toothbrush answer fails: that timing wall is fatal to it as stated. The dose camp itself concedes the famous toothbrush window of 20 November "cannot be the operative dosing moment" (the skeptic verified the custody chain strut by strut — Hal never brushes inside it), so the registered mechanism survives only as an invented earlier off-page dose that no sentence hints at. The stash really does vanish into unknown hands — that event is real and unexplained — but the text supplies a documented human suspect no camp argued (Troeltsch, the serial pilferer of Pemulis's stashes), the agent the theory nominates is on record dreading exactly this category of event ("he'd begun privately to fear that his son was experimenting with Substances"), and no page shows DMZ entering Hal by any route.

Two findings from this adjudication matter beyond the verdicts. First, the much-cited claim that the DMZ was "thrown out with the entrepôt (p. 965)" — which sits in the archive's own theory record — cites nothing: no such sentence exists anywhere in the novel's actual text — the claim appears to be a community-invented detail. Second, the collapse scene's trippy phenomenology, which all three camps claim, was tested in this adjudication against the archive's time-perception anthology — ground none of the camps had brought to bear — and the dose camps' key exclusivity claim ("withdrawal nowhere in this novel produces cognition like that") is false: withdrawal is this book's paradigm producer of deranged time (Kate Gompert's "you're going to spend the rest of your natural life feeling like this," from secret-marijuana withdrawal; Gately's "endless Now"; Poor Tony's "time itself seemed the corridor"), and Hal's attack — re-experiencing "the years' total number of steps," the rest-of-life repetitions lined up ahead — is closer to that withdrawal signature than to the drug's euphoric plowing-through-time profile.

The winner's honest weak point, recorded in full: the Year-of-Glad state is far more severe than any withdrawal picture the book draws — and the book's one dramatized case that does match Hal's endpoint (the Leavenworth convict, institutionalized forever, performing instead of communicating) is its DMZ case study. That surviving counter-evidence is exactly why the withdrawal reading records "favored" and not the tier above it.

The formal flag. The crux is ruled undecidable-by-design on positive evidence of engineering, not on the disagreement itself: the scene where Pemulis searches the wrecked stash is cut off before he confirms anything; Pemulis three times starts telling Hal something urgent about the DMZ and is interrupted every time; the collapse-day attack is written so that three etiologies read it clause for clause; the DMZ apparatus lives almost wholly in the endnotes; the wraith's point of view on the one relevant question is withheld in its own scene; and the year in which the answer would have to live is the novel's famous missing year. Within that engineered silence, the withdrawal reading is the one that needs no off-page event at all.

Worth knowing: one scene nobody had previously connected to this question turned out to matter — the Antitoi brothers bartering for "eighteen" DMZ lozenges (against p. 216's "thirteen") from a Swiss-accented stranger who threw in a bag of unlabeled read-only cartridges. It's mostly relevant to other open questions, but it does surface a genuine in-text contradiction in the lozenge count: the same stash is "eighteen" lozenges at the barter (pp. 481–482) but thirteen 50-mg. artifacts once Pemulis holds it (p. 216), while both scenes fix the total at 650 mg — so it can't be squared as a partial resale (thirteen of eighteen would no longer weigh 650 mg). The 650 mg is the constant; the count is the slip.
