Mid-whirl, an instant before the concussion, Kate's mind serves up an involuntary childhood memory — and the prose names the event twice over, "a flashback of reminiscence," memory doubled at the very moment the memory-organ is about to get bruised. (Carlisle catalogued the wide circle for Annular shapes; the parenthesis is what earns it here. The doubled phrasing reads as authorial pleonasm.)
