• What: During a call, Hal — who "never liked talking on the phone after he'd gotten high in secret down in the Pump Room" — reflects that "over 60% of what he told Orin on the phone since Orin had abruptly started calling again this spring was a lie," and that he likes lying to Orin without knowing why. A bout of "involuted marijuana-type thinking" leads him again to doubt "whether or not he was really all that intelligent." Orin steers the call toward "Separatism" (Steeply-driven probing). Develops Hal's compulsive deceit toward Orin and his marijuana-fed insecurity.
