IJ Book Club S2 Ep. 3: So It Goes — the Lenz/Green walk to the dog-killing, Bruce Green's backstory, Mario's Ennet House night (pp. ~575–589)

source

TL;DR

The Lenz/Green walk in full — Lenz's mother's Greyhound saga, Bruce Green's nut-can and Blammo-cigar origins, the dog-killing outside the Nuck party house — then Mario's insomniac walk down to Ennet House and the Madame Psychosis tape behind the flag. Three find-grade items: the Hamlet staging claim (the true play-within-a-play is the Hal–Stice match everyone watches while actually watching Steeply and Poutrincourt — Rosencrantz-and-Gildenstern spectation, set against the consensus Mario's-pageant reading); the narrator dossier gains two proximity data points (the lookout-phrasing that rules out both walkers as narrator, and the Ennet-House-not-Ennet's-house shift as the camera stepping back out of Mario); and the tape-listener theory — the figure behind the flag playing first-year Madame Psychosis is Joelle grounding herself, her version of Green's retreat-to-the-familiar, worked against Jamie's Joelle-is-as-connection-incapable-as-Orin counter. Plus the Hal-decline cause enumeration (weed, DMZ taken or given, the Wayne discovery, Orin's dredging), the FLQ-house/ AFR-counter-surveillance geography of Brainerd Road, and a p. 586 grammar catch for the print-verification flags. ASR transcript: paraphrase only.

Key claims

  • Coverage: reading opens at p. 575 [page heard on tape — ASR-derived, flag before citing] — Orin's drive (wheelchairs return), the Lenz/Green walk entire, and Mario's night walk to Ennet House; the panel notes the coming stretch (~601–619, pages as heard) runs straight through for once. [00:01, 01:28]
  • Orin material: the wheelchairs vanished the day before Steeply's visit and are back hours after she leaves — no coincidence, the surveillance gave her wide berth; the hotel-door handicapped man's wheelchair plus the legless surveyor's Swiss accent matching the hand model's, assembled as Orin's own dawning kertwang [ASR: curtwanged]. [00:02, 00:09]
  • The whole football team reads Steeply as female — worked three ways: the team pranking the punter, Orin's nuance-blind POV contaminating the report, or the text meaning it straight; Jamie's self-caught habit of taking narration literally flagged in passing. [00:05–00:06]
  • Lenz's mother's story (the Greyhound potty accident, the seven-figure settlement, the recliner and 24-hour pastry chef, death by peach cobbler) read as court-record reconstruction and probable AA-story one-upmanship — Lenz needing an origin story to match Green's; the she-was-a-data-processor-then-lost-all-will-to-process-data joke savored as money-changes-people. [00:14–00:21]
  • Kevin's youth-facility rider: Lenz's claim of doing research there disbelieved — more likely torturing to stay untortured, the same economy as cocaine-to-stay-clean. [00:15]
  • Bruce Green's backstory handled straight: the Paula Polynesian nut can scaring his mother literally to death, the father's overplayed laugh, the Blammo-cigar deaths across southeastern Ohio traced by the ATF, the mute years after; Sandburg's They All Want to Play Hamlet invoked for the seen-their-parents-die register; the no-unalloyed-sweetness rule stated (any sweet scene is a wind-up). [00:27–00:29, 00:38–00:40]
  • Green as the book's one likable character (the panel's recurring position), with the tempering rider: honorable, but honorable toward Lenz — does the ledger of good-guys even apply here. [00:13–00:14]
  • The walk's mechanics: the north-northwest compulsion (neither host recalls a stated reason); Lenz sharing feelings with Green as cocaine-enabled AA-speak parody (can't share in meetings, can share on a line); the ask-Green-about-ice bit as the perfect portrait of cokehead conversation. [00:22–00:24]
  • The dog-killing sequence: Lenz's tiptoed vaudeville skulk read as screenplay stage-direction (Shakespearean script-plus-lighting-notes); the lightless-arc blood description savored (the Simpsons colorless-odorless gag adduced); Green's frozen deer-in-headlights spectation — too big to hide, chance to flee long gone, breathing into the tree bark so his breath won't plume; Lenz's sacred northwest heading abandoned the instant the coffer is filled. [00:45–00:59, 01:00–01:03]
  • Geography of the aftermath: the Hawaiian-shirt Nucks read as an FLQ (or kindred) safe house — Hawaiian shirts being the established Nuck-insurgent wardrobe — with the AFR across the street in counter-surveillance (Kevin's catch), the wheelchair-must-park-parallel-to-the-window observation carried along; the panel voices the insurgents' view of the wreckage: first these druggie Americans killed the leader [ASR: Guillermo the police = Guillaume DuPlessis], now they kill the dog — the mission-from-God cell keeps getting fouled by addicts who don't know what they're stepping through. [01:05–01:09]
  • The Montego confusion worked live: the tear-assing car at the party house rings the Pat-Montesian bell; the panel sorts it — Pat drives the Aventura, the Montego is someone else's — and leaves the flag planted for the AFR-adjacent reading. [00:25–00:26, 01:04–01:05]
  • Mario material: the 19th-birthday timing (Wednesday 25 November), insomnia worsening with Madame Psychosis's hiatus into week three [ASR: poor misdiagnosis = Madame Psychosis]; Avril's night terrors upstairs and Mario listening for laugh-versus-scream; the hour of nighttime prayers; Ennet House as the place that feels real (crying, noise, God said with a straight face and nobody flinching) — the panel's rider that Ennet House's God is exactly the God Mario can understand. [01:09–01:12, 01:17–01:19]
  • Mario/JOI: himself — usually filed as a bad guy — was closer to Mario than anyone and filled Mario's head more than Avril did (she'd never even tell him not to wander at night); the imprinting question raised: is it possible to stamp too much of yourself onto a thing you yourself made — JOI succeeded with Mario in a way he never did with Hal or Orin. [01:11–01:15]
  • The helper: the unnamed young person who frees Mario's police lock guessed as Chandler Foss (the one normal-described resident). [01:26–01:27]
  • Program color: Jamie confirms Rochester + potholes (chuck holes new to both — participant-map anchor: Jamie is the Rochester host); the Slaughterhouse-Five week (Dresden anniversary read); Kevin's stance that this novel marks his personal ceiling for science fiction; Tim's teased DFW/Grateful Dead integration awaited. [00:18–00:19, 00:33–00:34, 01:18]

Theories & evidence

THEORY: The true play-within-a-play is the Hal–Stice match — everyone watches everyone but the play

  • Crux: hamlet-frame
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The Hamlet mechanics laid out (Jamie): at the Mousetrap, nobody watches the play — Rosencrantz and Guildenstern watch the queen, Hamlet watches the king, Polonius watches Hamlet; spectation of spectators is the scene's whole engine. [01:03–01:04]
    • [text] The IJ fit: at the Hal–Stice match, the gallery's real action is Steeply's conversation with Poutrincourt — the crowd present for a performance while the watchers watch each other — a tighter Mousetrap analogue than Mario's ETA pageant, which the panel grants is the consensus candidate. [01:03–01:05]
    • [inference] The concession kept: there may simply be two plays-within-the-play — Mario's show holds its claim; this one is added, not substituted. [01:04]
  • Notes: A genuinely specific staging argument for a crux the archive mostly carries at the allusion level — it names which scene performs Hamlet's spectation structure rather than which scene contains a nested work. Sandburg's They All Want to Play Hamlet, invoked earlier for Green [00:38], gives the session a second Hamlet lane the same night. Fold as a staging-candidate row, not a replacement for the pageant reading.

THEORY: The walk is narrated by an observational third — neither walker, and the camera steps back out of Mario by name

  • Crux: ij-narrator (with narrator-proximity)
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The lookout catch, on print's own sentence-opener: "While Green acts as lookout while Lenz relieves himself against a Market St. dumpster" (p. 575) — marked as a clue that neither Green nor Lenz narrates: an observational third person present at the dumpster. [00:11–00:12]
    • [text] The footnote rider: Green privately knows the truth of Joelle's veil (she told him) and keeps it while Lenz spouts the cyclops version — knowledge the narration holds that neither speaker deploys. [00:12–00:13]
    • [text] The step-back catch: through Mario's section it is Ennet's house; in the closing frame — the hillside trees closing behind him, Gately hunched at the desk like a slow boy — it becomes the Ennet House, read as the narrator stepping back out of Mario's idiom while still borrowing his slow-boy vision. [01:27–01:28]
    • [inference] The Green-processing rider: Green witnessing the killing is narrated as sensation Green couldn't articulate — the narration knows what Green knows without Green being able to say it. [00:53–00:55, 01:05]
  • Notes: Two clean proximity data points for the club's narrator dossier (the ep18–ep20 fingerprint cluster): a phrasing that excludes both candidates on scene, and a possessive-to-institutional shift as a distance dial. The screenplay/stage-direction observation about Lenz's skulk [00:46] rides along as texture for the camera-like register.

THEORY: The figure playing first-year Madame Psychosis behind the flag is Joelle, grounding herself — her luau

  • Crux: ennet-tape-listener (proposed — not in the theory registry)
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The setup: Mario hears a Madame Psychosis broadcast he can date to roughly her first year; the shape behind the blue-and-white flag reads female; Joelle is resident at Ennet House; the panel finds it hard to imagine anyone else. [01:19–01:21]
    • [inference] The grounding read: as Green retreats to trailer memories when the present overloads, Joelle replays the year the freebasing and the Incandenza world and the actressing she loved were live — the listening itself certifying that the remembered year really happened; her luau, her shitting-her-pants party. [01:21–01:23]
    • [text] The timing rider (Kevin): the scene sits close on the calendar (Wednesday the 11th, late evening, as the panel dates it) to the Joelle/Gately material — old feelings being dredged while new ones form. [01:23–01:24]
    • [inference] The counter kept in the block (Jamie): Joelle is as connection-incapable as Orin — she has feelings for Gately, but they don't override the pull of her own archived voice; the daddy's-sweatpants arrival at Gately's bed adduced as the unreconciled datum. [01:23–01:24]
  • Notes: The identification itself is near-consensus and cheap to hold; the session's value is the two riders — the grounding-ritual mechanism (a clean Green/Joelle structural parallel inside one episode) and the connection-incapacity counter, which keeps the Gately-feelings question honestly open rather than romantic. If the archive's Joelle material already carries the listener ID, this proposal collapses into a mechanism row there.

THEORY: Orin's damage traces to Avril — approval-quest inverted, incest declined

  • Crux: orin-avril-abuse (with avril-devouring-mother)
  • Stance: entertains
  • Evidence:
    • [inference] The explicit decline (Kevin): not willing to say Orin and Avril were sexual — the claim held is smaller: the same total-approval quest Hal runs toward Avril, running in Orin on a different plane. [00:03]
    • [inference] The negative pole (Jamie): where Hal lives on Avril's affirmation, Orin carries the injuries — stated on-air as Avril sleeping with Orin's friends, with the panel treating it as given [unverified against print: what the text actually establishes about Avril and Orin's circle remains an open check]. [00:03–00:04]
    • [text] The symmetry extension: Orin wants from JOI what Hal wants from Avril — the Joelle-era material adduced (Orin promising her a sit-down with Himself, the get-her-in-movies push); the seduction cycle (excitement, hope, acquisition, contempt) leaving him stunned rides as the damage's signature. [00:02, 00:06–00:07]
    • [inference] The widened restatement: not unable to relate to women — unable to relate to persons (the Steeply misread adduced, with the team-prank caveat). [00:05–00:06]
  • Evidence note: the friends claim is the block's soft spot — logged as heard, tagged for print verification, not inherited.
  • Notes: Maps cleanly onto the archive's existing abuse/ devouring-mother lanes without adding a mechanism; the useful new-ish bit is the two-pole framing (Hal gets the affirmation, Orin gets the wounds) as one system.

THEORY: Hal's decline — the causes enumerated, including given-not-taken DMZ

  • Crux: hal-condition (with hal-dmz; avril-dosed-hal adjacency)
  • Stance: entertains
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The detector: Mario can no longer feel where Hal is or read his states — the lost-something-in-a-dream figure, with the panel's catch that Orin uses the same dream-loss figure; Mario-never-changes makes him the fixed instrument measuring Hal's drift. [01:15–01:16]
    • [inference] The causes run without adjudication: quitting weed; learning about Wayne and Avril; having taken DMZ — or been given it (the panel's own hedge, unprompted); Orin's interviews dredging what Hal repressed. [01:16–01:17]
    • [text] The therapy rider: Hal shortcutted the grief therapy — told the therapist what he wanted to hear — so the dredged material was never processed, only deferred. [01:17]
  • Notes: The enumeration adds nothing new singly, but the given-DMZ hedge arriving spontaneously in a civilian read is a data point the dosing lane likes, and Mario-as-fixed-instrument is a tidy formulation for the detector argument the archive already runs. The JOI parallel earlier in the session — himself identifying breaking-through-to-Hal as his life's work [00:08] — rides adjacent.

THEORY: JOI built Mario's inner life — the imprinting question

  • Crux: mario-grace
  • Stance: entertains
  • Evidence:
    • [text] Mario as the book's good — innocent, virginal, pure; everything about him right except how he looks; Ennet House feels real to him where ETA doesn't; the straight-faced God nobody smirks at is a God Mario can understand. [01:12–01:13, 01:17–01:19]
    • [inference] The claim: JOI, usually cast as a failure-father, was Mario's closest figure and filled his head more than Avril (who'd never even check his wandering) — himself instilled the realness and character Mario carries, and did it with neither Hal nor Orin. [01:13–01:15]
    • [inference] The generalization: is there such a thing as stamping too much of yourself onto what you yourself produced — the sons who look and act the part (Hal, Orin) took the damage; the son outside resemblance took the good. [01:15]
  • Notes: A JOI-rehabilitation angle routed through Mario rather than the wraith — complements the archive's grace material and the paternity question without touching it (the panel does not raise mario-paternity here; the imprinting logic arguably cuts against it — a point worth carrying alongside that record).

THEORY: Influence tracing — Slaughterhouse-Five's unstuck time and the On the Road opening

  • Crux: beats-influence (proposed in ijbc-ep46; the Vonnegut half extends past that proposal's scope)
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [secondary] The session's frame: Jamie rereads Slaughterhouse-Five on the Dresden anniversary and reads it against IJ as a book Wallace certainly knew — Billy Pilgrim's world-to-world, back-and-forward time-bouncing likened to the wraith [ASR renders it the race — almost certainly the wraith]; the Tralfamadorian dead-aren't-dead consolation [ASR: Trafalgar] carried along; the episode title So It Goes is the session's own Vonnegut stamp. [00:33–00:36]
    • [text] The Kerouac half restated: the first-chapter On the Road homage the club has claimed before, with Kevin's rider that the books otherwise share almost nothing. [00:35–00:36]
    • [inference] The method statement: read what Wallace read and trace how it surfaces — with Kevin's honest limit that he hasn't read enough to catch the references. [00:35]
  • Notes: Second IJBC sighting for the proposed beats-influence reading (home: ijbc-ep46; see also ijbc-ep07's adjacent strain). The Vonnegut claim is new and separable — it may belong under a wider postwar-influences umbrella, or stand on its own; the sci-fi-tolerance framing (IJ at the outer edge of Kevin's sci-fi tolerance, credible because reality-rooted) is a useful genre-position datum either way.

THEORY: Mario's taping ethic is the Grateful Dead taper split

  • Crux: grateful-dead-influence
  • Stance: mentions
  • Evidence:
    • [text] Mario has never taped Madame Psychosis because it wouldn't be right — those are her words and thoughts; he wouldn't sell it, but feels he shouldn't even own it free — read against the Dead's internal split (Garcia's once-I-play-it-I'm-done versus the bandmates wanting payment). [01:17–01:19]
    • [secondary] The first-year dating move — she did this thing that year, later years had the background — explicitly likened to Deadhead show-dating culture. [01:19–01:20]
  • Notes: Light but on-slug; Tim's teased DFW/Dead integration is name-checked again (still unaired — watch for it). Fold as a sighting row.

Themes

Watchers watching watchers (the Mousetrap staging, Green at the tree, the AFR across the street); retreat to the familiar under overload (Green's trailer memories, Joelle's tapes, the acid-trip booze-land anecdote); origin stories as currency (Lenz's mother, Green's nut can, AA one-upmanship); the good routed around resemblance (Mario and JOI); no unalloyed sweetness.
