IJ Book Club S2 Ep. 7: Different Types of Sight — the match from the gallery, Matty Pemulis at the Man o' War, Hal in the viewing room (pp. ~673–~689)

source

TL;DR

Three scenes, all about watching. The Hal–Stice match seen only from the gallery (three points of tennis, pages of watchers): Poutrincourt read as an obvious plant, her attainment-without-transcendence doom theory walked, and the types-of-sight/types-of-light translation slip worked into the founder's actual subject — the relation between the seer and the seen. Matty Pemulis at the Man o' War grille: the narration's bowel-movement-to-shit register shift caught as a narrator fingerprint, Tim E.'s trigger reading of the molestation flashback, and the where-was-the-mother endnote turned into the session's best narrator contest — Jamie's wraith-blames-the-mother reading against Kevin's it-sounds-like-Hal-or-Pemulis ear and his confessed first-read imprinting of Hal as the narrating voice. Then Hal in VR6: the frantic film-cycling read as looking-for-a-message, Tim's Smothergill-played-Hal identification with Hal's name-block on his own stand-in, Wave Bye-Bye to the Bureaucrat walked whole (kindness over self-preservation; the are-you-Jesus exchange), and Blood Sister's germination in JOI's failed AA stint read as the surrender divide — halfwits make the leap, the genius couldn't. ASR transcript: paraphrase only.

Key claims

  • Coverage: pickup p. 673 [ASR-heard] — the exhibition-match gallery scene (Steeply, Poutrincourt, deLint, Troeltsch self-commentating, Mario filming overhead), then 14 Nov at the Man o' War grille (Matty Pemulis, Poor Tony passing), then back three days to 11 Nov for Hal's deLint check-in and the VR6 film session; next session starts with the Poor Tony material. Only three points of the match are rendered before pages of aftermath — flagged live as wild.
  • Roster/program color: Tim E. fails to connect again (upgrading his ISP to the 1980s; the Elon Musk crack) — his emailed notes carry several of the session's best items; a summer slowdown is announced; the computus/Easter-dating tangent closes.
  • The play-within-the-play restated: Jamie re-asserts (dozens-of-times, his phrase) the match-as-Mousetrap claim — everyone ostensibly at an exhibition, actually watching each other — with Mario's lens-and-metal-pole apparition overhead completing the watchers-stacked-on-watchers picture (continuous with ep23's staging argument).
  • Poutrincourt the plant: no-detective-needed verdict — the rictal smile (thrice-counted across the session), the blue under-eye circles (the blue-waiting-room rhyme), Québécois-not-Parisian French, Steeply's check-the-files footnote note-to-self; her scary-nun rimless specs caught as Blood Sister foreshadowing (one tough nun); and the reciprocity observation — she reads Steeply as closely as he reads her, catching that the genre-dysphoric [as heard] father-description cannot be Hal's (Steeply's source is showing), and her to-have-it-both-ways aside arrives in suddenly near-accentless English.
  • The attainment material walked: more appealing to want than to attain; the two doom-modes for the untranscendent (the shocking non-redemption of the achieved goal, or celebration pursued with the same totality as pursuit — print: "you cannot both celebrate and suffer, and play is always suffering, just so" (p. 681)); pressure entering only after upset wins create you for people (the promise-is-nothing recall from the club's earlier grandfather material); Clipperton adduced; the Lamont Chu / Lyle it-never-ends recall; the Japan suicide-rate example doubted as an example even while the doctrine is bought.
  • Match texture: the ball that veered out in an abrupt tight curve as if gusted, Stice more surprised than Hal — with the panel's point that the server knows exactly where he aimed; Hal's face registering nothing; deLint's some-days-Hal-flips-out-of-the-match / part-of-him-leaves-and-hovers line tied to both the wraith and Mario-overhead (see theory blocks).
  • Smoking-era color: Steeply lighting up in the bleachers dated as period-true by the panel's own 90s inventories (mall ashtrays, the typist office, the gas-station counter, an-AA-meeting-in-Boston comparison); the glossy-cologne-insert magazines dated the same way; putative looked up and enjoyed (the putative news hunt — neither news person nor lady).
  • deLint comedy: babe deployed at Helen while deLint demonstrably knows (Steeply's not-here-to-profile-the-boy in French gets ignored); the Camp Anawanna head-counselor casting (Kevin); Troeltsch pretending to be two people (the controller Incandenza bit savored) while narration, deLint, and Troeltsch all do color commentary of the same points — everyone commentates.
  • The coaching-speak autopsy: you-never-quite-occurred-out-there filleted as seed-justifying non-coaching (the panel's own business-coaching confessions; what real coaching would sound like — a concrete serve adjustment — conspicuously absent from the whole book); Hal's check-in read as performed diligence (going through the motions of caring about a match he won).
  • Wayne's compartmentalization named as the deLint-praised trait (the point may as well never have happened) — and Jamie extends it to Avril: after J.W. leaves her, no problem stopping by Hal's room — the affair partners share the trait (logged for the character lane, not pressed further).
  • Matty Pemulis texture: Inman Square as in-man pun (Tim E.'s catch, seconded); the neat-eater detail; Poor Tony identifiable only by boa, red leather coat, and the throat-hollow hand — the grand-entrances-into-pockets-of-space description admired as elegant against his actual stumbling state; sickening-and-awesome rhyming with the college kids' totally-ill-or-totally-odd; Matty's window as his television (the Portuguese arguers exit stage right); tacking glossed as sailing against the wind — the molestation approach as movement against all of nature (the panel's acting-class tacking anecdote); the toy-truck minefield detail (left the first time by accident, maintained thereafter) savored as devastating; the father's aspirated-blood death paired with Gately's mother's blood-vomiting; Matty toasting his father's memory with every first shot — the non-blame that makes the endnote contest matter.
  • The Mickey question: Mickey = Michael Pemulis agreed; the panel wonders (via the Raquel-Welch-mask sister's logic — when the father can no longer, he moves to the next) whether Mickey knew and was in part relieved it wasn't him — held as a wonder, not a claim (pemulis-redeemable adjacency).
  • VR6 texture: anyone-looking-would-call-Hal-depressed vs what Hal is doing (see theory block); the spitting and the ready waste can; the signed-out diskettes and queuing slots; the soundproofed room; Medusa-v-Odalisk ejected exactly when the on-screen audience starts petrifying (the Joelle adjacency noted); the session's return-to-VR6-at-the-book's-end continuity flagged by Kevin (this is not the last time; the shoes-off observation about the girls arriving later cited as evidence the viewing-room scenes really happen).
  • Tim E.'s genetic-criticism note relayed: the floor chart with Stice's and Wayne's names on top and Hal's absent reads as foreshadowing for a Stice challenge match Wallace eventually deleted [secondary — drafts claim, needs a scholarship source check before inheriting].

Theories & evidence

THEORY: The narration speaks the room's language — register shifts and naming instability as proximity fingerprints

  • Crux: narrator-proximity (with ij-narrator)
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The register catch: the sidewalk deposit is bowel movement in narration until the Portuguese arguers say shit — after which the narration says shit too; the panel's spades-are-broken analogy — the narrator may not play the word until the scene breaks it. [00:39–00:41]
    • [text] Naming instability: Hal is Incandenza and Hal within one opening sentence; the Don G. Gately AA-scene naming recall; Orin perpetually the punter — read as the describer shifting distance mid-sentence. [00:01]
    • [text] Free indirect confirmed live: the samizdat-director's-other-son designation for Hal read as Helen's head, not the narrator's own idiom (who else would need other son) — the narration wearing the nearest watcher. [00:09–00:10]
    • [inference] The light lane: the hats-clash eye-shielding and the book's persistent strangeness about light read against the founder's documented fascination with how light attaches to things — offered as a wraith-narrator pointer. [00:04–00:05]
  • Notes: The bowel-movement/shit shift is the cleanest register-borrowing instance in the club's dossier — mechanical, page-local, corpus-checkable — and pairs with ep23's Ennet's-house/Ennet-House possessive shift as the same dial observed twice. Fold with the ep18–ep20 fingerprint cluster.

THEORY: The where-was-the-mother endnote — the voice contest, and what each candidate implies

  • Crux: joi-narrator (with ij-narrator, hal-narration-drop adjacency)
  • Stance: entertains (split)
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The datum (Tim E.'s catch): the endnote on the molestation scene asks where Mrs. Pemulis was all that time — shell-breathing silent, little Mickey curled at the far wall — closing with an is-what-I'd-want-to-know. [00:52–00:53]
    • [inference] Jamie's reading, assuming the wraith/himself narrates: of the available blames (the man, the drink), the narrator chooses the mother's failure to guard — a sick displacement (if-I-don't-watch-my-husband logic) that rhymes with a husband who never confronted his own wife's conduct; the it's-his-autobiography frame (the self-indulgent filmography chapter as himself getting his work into the book) rides alongside. [00:53–00:54, blob]
    • [inference] Kevin's counter-ear: the is-what-I'd-want-to-know casualness sounds like Hal or Pemulis, not the formal himself; the Pemulis fourth-wall footnote precedent (Mike Pemulis here) makes a Pemulis note-writer conceivable — and Mickey not wanting to blame the father fits the toast ritual. [00:54–00:56]
    • [inference] The method confession (Kevin): his first read installed Hal as the narrating voice and it cannot be unheard — prejudice named as prejudice; against which Jamie's flat we-can-agree-Hal-is-not-narrating draws an actual really — the club does not agree. [00:56–00:57]
    • [text] The counter-datum from the same session: Hal has no idea Blood Sister germinated from his father's AA stint — the narration knows what Hal cannot — logged by Jamie as another strike against Hal-as-narrator (at least for those sentences). [blob]
  • Notes: The contest matters more than the verdict: one endnote simultaneously supports blame-displacing-JOI (content) and casual-junior-voice (diction), which is the composite-narrator problem in miniature. The Kevin imprinting confession is worth keeping as reader-method data. Print-verify the endnote's exact wording before folding — the diction argument lives or dies on phrasing the ASR cannot certify.

THEORY: Types of sight is the founder's real subject — the relation of seer to seen, applied to Hal in the viewing room

  • Crux: film-camera-narrator
  • Stance: entertains
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The slip worked: Poutrincourt relays Schtitt's line that "this Founder was a student of types of sight" (p. 681); the panel suspects types of light mistranslated — then the text's own gloss arrives: "The studying was not so much how one sees a thing, but this relation between oneself and what one sees. He translated this numerously across different fields" (p. 682) — and the panel adopts sight as the better word after all. [00:33–00:35]
    • [inference] The application: anyone looking at Hal in VR6 would call him depressed; what Hal is doing is studying his father's films — the gap between being-seen (depressed kid alone rewatching) and seeing (searching the corpus) is itself a types-of-sight instance; kinds-of-pain noted as the same title-shape. [blob]
    • [text] The camera stack: Mario's apparition filming the match from overhead; deLint's part-of-Hal-leaves-and-hovers line likened to both the wraith and Mario; Wave Bye-Bye's closing reveal that the camera was mounted on the departing train the whole time — the book keeps disclosing that a watcher was mounted somewhere you didn't suspect. [00:22–00:23, 00:37, blob]
    • [inference] The founder's own trajectory rides: himself described (in the club's memory of the filmography) as moving from optics to watching — the founder-as-student-of-sight line read as the book's self-description. [as heard]
  • Notes: The episode title is the panel's own flag that this is the session's organizing idea. The train-camera reveal belongs in the crux's instance list if not already there; the seer/seen-relation gloss is the cleanest statement of the camera-consciousness claim the club lane has produced.

THEORY: Smothergill is Hal's stand-in in the filmography — and Hal's name-block on him is motivated

  • Crux: filmography-coded-message
  • Stance: entertains
  • Evidence:
    • [secondary] The identification (Tim E., relayed and adopted provisionally): the child actor whose name Hal cannot for the life of him recall — Philip T. Smothergill — played the Hal figure in himself's films; the professional-conversationalist film located live in the filmography (It Was a Great Marvel That He Was in the Father Without Knowing Him, endnote page 992 [ASR-heard]; n. 24), whose synopsis reads "A father (Watt), suffering from the delusion that his etymologically precocious son (Smothergill) is pretending to be mute, poses as a ‘professional conversationalist’ in order to draw the boy out." (n. 24) — the scene Hal lived, cast with his stand-in. [blob]
    • [text] The block's shape: Hal whacks himself above the eye to dislodge the name; Ogilvie once lectured a whole period on the character, repeating the actor's name over and over — the name is maximally available and maximally blocked; he cannot recall the bureaucrat's actor either, but it's the kid's name driving him bats. [blob]
    • [inference] The panel's careful stop: not ready to claim Hal consciously knows the actor played him — but Hal should know the professional-conversationalist scenario happened to him, and the title (in the father without knowing him) is doing open work; the maddening part flagged: Hal is otherwise deeply versed in the corpus. [blob]
  • Notes: A strong instance for the filmography-as-coded-message crux: the film both re-stages a lived scene and names the father-recognition problem in its title, and the name-block supplies the repression mechanics. Verify the filmography entry and the Ogilvie detail in print (endnote page is ASR-heard). Fold with whatever the crux already holds on Wave Bye-Bye — this session adds Hal's secret liking and his self-projection into the ex-bureaucrat driving toward ontological erasure [as heard, print territory].

THEORY: Blood Sister's germination is the surrender divide — halfwits make the leap, the genius couldn't

  • Crux: joi-death (with ij-aa-love-letter adjacency; this-is-water-connection proposed in sibling inventory — choice/surrender lane)
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The datum: Blood Sister: One Tough Nun germinated from JOI's one brief unpleasant Boston-AA experience — Himself "lasted two and a half months and then drifted gradually away, turned off by the simplistic God-stuff and covert dogma" (p. 689, print's hyphenated God-stuff) — a fact the narration holds and Hal has no idea of. [blob]
    • [secondary] Tim E.'s maximal claim, relayed: himself's failure to stick — drifting from the thing that works because its vocabulary offended him — is literally the whole point of the novel; the lead trims it to interesting-or-ironic rather than the whole point. [blob]
    • [inference] Jamie's mechanism: the book parades halfwits (Gately self-described) who say the God stuff is bullshit and surrender anyway — and it works; himself, the genius, could not make the halfwit's leap, having since the 1963 garage day relied only on himself — self-reliance as the fatal competence. [blob]
    • [text] The foreshadow catch riding along: Poutrincourt's scary-nun rimless specs at the match, hours before Hal queues the tough-nun cartridge. [00:13, blob]
  • Notes: The cleanest club-lane statement of the surrender-vs-self-reliance reading of JOI's arc, and it slots the Bob-Hope-hopeless pun ecology without needing it. The whole-point maximalism is Tim E.'s, not the panel's — preserve the attribution split. The Gately-halfwit-surrender contrast is the reading's backbone.

THEORY: Hal's film-cycling is a search, not a wallow

  • Crux: hal-condition (with filmography-coded-message adjacency)
  • Stance: entertains
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The behavior: seven-odd films in parts and fragments, ejecting Medusa-v-Odalisk at the petrification point, the signed-out diskettes queued to drop in order — more frantic than restful (Kevin's DVR-vs-discs point: this cycling costs effort). [blob]
    • [inference] The two readings kept live: flippant (off the weed, nothing holds — I-know-what-happens restlessness) versus searching — Hal looking for a message he half-received once while high and now actually needs, can't remember which film carried it (Jamie's formulation; Kevin's friend-who-never-finished-a-song analogue for the flip side). [blob]
    • [text] The tell the panel likes: what he stays for — Wave Bye-Bye, the unhip-earnest one, Mario's favorite, which Hal secretly likes and self-projects into — kindness over self-preservation as the thing that arrests the cycling. [blob]
  • Notes: The searching reading converts the VR6 scenes from mood-illustration into plot (what does Hal need from the corpus), which is why it earns a block; the session's own types-of-sight frame (observers would say depressed) is the built-in caution against adjudicating from outside. The are-you-Jesus / don't-I-wish exchange and the last-straw-chooses-kindness reading ride here for the fold.

Themes

Watchers stacked on watchers (the gallery, Mario overhead, the train-mounted camera); the seer/seen relation as the founder's subject and the book's method; register and naming as narrator tells; attainment without transcendence (Poutrincourt's doom, Clipperton, the celebration trap); surrender versus self-reliance (Gately's leap, JOI's drift); kindness as the arresting image.
