Pemulis’s real enduring gift is for math and hard science, and his scholarship is the coveted James O. Incandenza Geometrical Optics Scholarship, of which there is only one, and which each term Pemulis manages to avoid losing by just one dento-dermal layer of overall G.P.A., and which gives him sanctioned access to all the late director’s lenses and equipment, some of which turn out to be useful to unrelated enterprises.
Context
How JOI's lens collection outlives him: a single named scholarship, in geometrical optics, held each term by one dento-dermal layer of G.P.A. — and the holder is the school's dealer, with "sanctioned access to all the late director's lenses and equipment," the sentence closing on the dry hinge "useful to unrelated enterprises." The plan's one-liner exactly: the editing labs and lens collection circulate onward via the Optics Scholarship, i.e. the dead optician's apparatus now funds and equips the next generation's schemes. (That this sanctioned lab access feeds the later DMZ machinery is a forward-read, inferred — this raw says only "unrelated enterprises.")
