He rides mysteriously home from meets alone — "the bus was Schtittless" — and reappears at dawn drills with "elaborate work-ups of everything that had gone wrong," "particularly shrill and insistent and negative after they'd won something." Concrete care for the roster: at Port Washington he had trainer Barry Loach inject Schacht's ruined knee; after the 17 Nov YDAU accidental dosing of John Wayne, "Schtitt's been up to see him." The kids mock him in kind — a locker-room ditty ("Had sex with Herr Schtitt on a train," scene 129); a dosed John Wayne renders him as if "denied some kind of vitally important moisture from birth henceforward" (n332).
