Aftermath and legacy: the honors and burial, C.T. moving in, the coded/asymmetric grief, the reputation, and the lab-and-tunnels legacy

• What: JOI's "untimely suicide at fifty-four was held a great loss in at least three worlds": President Gentle conferred a posthumous citation via the O.N.R. and post-annular A.E.C.; his "burial in Quebec's L'Islet County was twice delayed by annular hyperfloration cycles"; Cornell University Press announced a festschrift; apres-garde filmmakers paid oblique tribute; and E.T.A. juniors "whose hypertrophied arms could fit inside them wore black bands on court for almost a year." At home the mourning was asymmetric: Hal listened to Tosca and wept, Mario and even C.T. cried, but "how come the Moms never cried?" — Hal's answer, "there are two ways to lower a flag to half-mast." C.T. moved into HmH within days and assumed the headmastership (and "is far better at public relations and pump-priming than was Himself," 165); JOI's posthumous codicil gaily willed Mario the head-mount Bolex for his thirteenth Xmas (071); Hal still wears "a thick old white alpaca tennis jacket that had been his father's" (094). Distinct from those honors, the present scenes add scattered aftermath: the funeral is remembered chiefly through "C.T.'s misadventure at Himself's funeral" (172, unexplained); JOI's reputation among the players is unsentimental (in John Wayne's DMZ-broadcast rant, "the Academy's own late Founder... so full of himself he could have shit limbs," n332); the grief stays coded (Mario circles it with Avril, who describes "persons who are deeply afraid of their own emotions... afraid of obliteration, emotional engulfment," and remembers of a clay ashtray "it's the last time I believe he enjoyed himself on something, thoroughly," 154). His physical legacy persists in the plant: "Dr. James Incandenza's old optics and editing facilities" off the E.T.A. tunnels, still used for "Leith/Ogilvie classes in entertainment production" (129); "Himself designed the Academy's indirect lighting" (170); and Hal inherited "the dental problems from Himself... half his teeth were bridges" (154). One as printed wrinkle: Hal recalls "Himself had publicly repudiated this kind of window-glass in an interview in Lens & Pane when the stuff first came out" (160, of smoky-brown mirror glass) — set against Orin's claim (n234) that JOI invented smudge-proof window glass "and sold it to Mitsubishi" (different products, but the glass-and-optics fortune is glossed inconsistently — see Dating notes).
