IJ Book Club Ep. 32 (S2 Ep 12): Novocain for the Soul — Marathe at Ennet, Mario's documentary night, and three conversations that aren't (pp. ~746–769)

TL;DR

A two-host session (Jamie and Kevin; nobody else made it) covering the stretch from the tail of Joelle's Thanksgiving-dinner flashback through Marathe's evening inside Ennet House, Mario's head-camera documentary night (Stitt, Lamont Chu, Avril's office), the Hal–Mario 4:00-a.m. bedroom talk about lying, and the Marathe–Kate Gompert bar scene that gives the episode its title. The announced frame is mirroring — the episode keeps cataloguing doubled scenes and doubled people — and the strongest sustained thread is the club's long-running audit of whether Hal actually converses (verdict: he talks; he almost never converses), capped by a genuinely new question: if Avril's father and grandfather needed drink to unfreeze, does Hal need pot? Also a live, concrete Joelle/Avril doubling catch (the Kleenex ring-wiping) and a dropped-thread find (Mario's Madame Psychosis tape errand never recurs in the book). Note for position-tracking: ep30 ended at p. 736 announcing footnote 304 as the next opening; this session starts ten pages past that — the endnote and pp. ~736–746 were indeed covered by ep31 (The Vapors; see ijbc-ep31, digested the same day as this note — the endnote-304 close-read lives there). No footnote-304 discussion here, and no Tim.
• The mirroring frame, announced up top and worked throughout: Joelle recounting a pleasant Incandenza Thanksgiving against the Thanksgiving dinner at which she was (or was not) disfigured; Hal waking Mario as the mirror of the earlier scene where Mario wakes Hal; Lamont Chu telling Mario it is like talking to a rock echoed two scenes later by Hal telling Mario it is like talking to the moms; Johnette leaning in the office door read as an echo of Wayne-or-Pemulis leaning into Hal's room.
• The episode's connective claim about all three long scenes (Mario– Avril, Hal–Mario, Marathe–Kate): people talking a great deal without being in a conversation — interfacing, saying the lines of their roles, running parallel talk-tracks; nobody learns anything from anybody. • Marathe inside Ennet: Pat overheard on the phone saying no to a relapser who has promised before (one-day-at-a-time noticing: no for today, tomorrow may differ); the hosts split on the section — Kevin historically lukewarm but warmer on this reread, reading it as necessary bridge plot toward the AFR-videotape hunt; Jamie protective of Pat, reading the scene as an all-good person (leads with her heart, has a soft spot for wheelchair cases — the phrase is ASR-garbled) being worked by an all-bad actor who registers her only as the authority-figure woman. Kevin grants Marathe wiggle room the other AFRs lack: everything he does is framed as buying Gertrude's medical care, and on tape he is still genuinely undecided whether to report first to Fortier or to Steeply. Once he learns Joelle is on the premises he stops trying to leave, and he schemes to get a look at the cartridge cases in the office cabinet before it locks — his interest visibly piqued; Pat separately asks that some cartridges be reviewed before public consumption.
• Joelle's flashback verdict on the Incandenzas: the family was lousy with secrets, and the pretense that overt eccentricity equals openness is part of the sadness; she spends the dinner half participating and half taking anticipatory notes on how it differs from her own home (her father on her lap the whole dinner — the contrast is hers).
• Mario's documentary night (11 Nov, 2100h, cold): the head-mounted Bolex rig; coach Stitt passed out under Wagner at volumes Mario cannot stand; the towel encounter; Lamont Chu pumping him about eschaton fallout (someone must take the fall; Struck was passed out; Kittenplan's little buddy was not even there) while Mario runs his yes-yes-keep-talking track and recommends Lyle as the person for concerns. Neither Hal nor Mario ever considers that their mother has the inside track on discipline — a recurring blind spot the hosts flag.
• Avril's office: fiend for light, the whole bank of overheads on, a black hole of light (Orin's description recalled); she is on the phone handling quasi-official matters mostly unrelated to ETA affairs, and the caller knows who Mario is (see THEORY below); the head-rig was built for Mario by Himself with great care — recalled on tape as the last thing he thoroughly enjoyed making; the two of them as the two least embarrassable people either knows; the magazine person (in the building since afternoon, on the prowl for Hal, CT running interference) placed; where-is-Hal ripples through the whole evening (tooth thing; Pemulis seen taking the truck), which the hosts note without resolving because both had meant to dig into where Hal actually is and neither did.
• The sadness catechism: Mario asks how you tell when someone is sad; Avril corrects his grammar first, then produces an encyclopedia of symptoms; Mario's counter-idea — what if the person is not less himself but more himself than usual — lands as the section's live question, and she turns it back on him (is he checking whether she has sensed that he himself is sad). The hosts read her as running her lines (the role calls for Mario to feel no less loved than her other children) rather than conversing, and note she does not bring adult wisdom to the table — no coddling.
• Avril's genealogy as read on tape: her grandfather could feel emotion only when drunk — four drunks a year, weeping, throwing her father through the living-room window, roaming the countryside for days; her father the same pattern minus defenestration, drinking in his chair until the day he fell out of it and did not get up — which freed her to attend university. The hosts wonder whether this is the first time she has told Mario the story, and notice she tells it smiling pleasantly while cleaning an ashtray. Age math worked on air: Avril is 56, Hal 17, so she was 39 at his birth — both hosts had wrongly pictured the Incandenzas coupling in their twenties.
• The Hal–Mario bedside scene: Hal's bad dream about teeth (and the bills for someone else's teeth); Hal thinking compulsively about Orin since CT's office, which Jamie can only explain via the ease with which Pemulis lies — something awakened; Hal's admiration for Pemulis's nerveless performance on the urologist (he could have sold the man land; Hal self-identifies as the type who would buy it); the arrival at Hal's new monster definition — at 17 the only real monsters are the perfect liars who give nothing away, inscrutable, walking among us and teaching our children; Mario's counter-position that lying never even occurs to him — he believes everything everyone says, glossed by Jamie via how hard Mario has had to work for every proficiency: why spend the breath to make sounds that are not true. Kevin flags the wondering-why-you-do-not-ask framing as strange since Mario is never given room to ask.
• Structural catch (Kevin): Mario asks Hal to teach him how to ask a stranger to borrow the old Madame Psychosis tapes; the gala/storm is nine days out (the 20th, against today's 10th/11th), and the errand never comes up again anywhere in the book — a dropped thread, since the book does not end two days later (see THEORY below).
• The bar scene: Kate, mugged and in the bar to throw up, hears the insanity-of-the-first-drink parable replayed from meetings and orders the Kahlua and cream it warns about; the drink works — the title phrase, novocain of the soul, is her gloss (paraphrase; ASR), along with the realization she has wasted her time on one-hitters; she was deciding how to kill herself even before the mugging, so worrying about a drink seems silly; the hosts stress she is aiming at zero, not pleasure — feeling no pain. Marathe mirrors her language step for step (totally identifying, the billowing black wing), rehashes his Gertrude story — the skull-less woman who saved his life, love as no-choice — in nearly the terms of his Steeply mountainside debate (temple coming to Muhammad), and the hosts read the whole performance as limbering her up not for seduction but to show her the Entertainment: the closing hook is his hypothetical offer of something three streets away promising more pleasure than she has ever felt and an end to sorrow, which lands after her profane pushback. Kate is noted as remarkably lucid and perceptive here — out of her head, i.e. out of the depression, for once. Jamie's side-noticing: Marathe's wife shares her name with Hamlet's mother. And Kate's misnaming of Marathe as Ray sticks.
• Closing appreciations: the light-writing at the section ends — Avril soaking up light, connected back to the Poor Tony seizure ending and to the helicopter searchlights at Joelle's overdose (p. 373, ASR-derived) — DFW's habit of capping disjointed stretches with one gorgeous tying-together paragraph; a casting game for a hypothetical film (Anjelica Huston vs Robin Wright as Avril; the young Bill Evans, tall and hunched at the piano, as Himself's look); and homework: Kevin leaves with copies of Hamlet on his table and a promise to read it in a sitting.
