Infinite Jest: a scene-by-scene guide
TL;DR
An independent scene-by-scene table of Infinite Jest — every scene given a chapter number, a page range, its subsidized year, and a one-line synopsis — covering the whole narrative body from Hal's opening interview (p. 3) to the novel's final page (p. 981). Though re-hosted by Biblioklept for the novel's thirtieth anniversary in 2026, it is an older document: its running header and correction address ("faculty.sunydutchess.edu … oneill@sunydutchess.edu") place its origin at a community-college faculty page no later than March 2011. Its value here is as a second, fully independent map of where one scene ends and the next begins, and of what subsidized year each belongs to. Tested against the archive's own scene spine, the two maps agree remarkably: they never once contradict on a scene's subsidized year. Every difference between them is a difference of granularity — how finely to cut the same continuous text — not of dating.
Key claims
- A complete map of the novel's body, but of the body only. The guide's table runs to 189 rows across pp. 3–981. It gives the endnotes no scenes of their own — two rows are bare pointers reading just "footnote 324" and "footnote 332" at the pages that call them — even though its companion first-reader note insists the endnotes are "essential."
- Page-and-year as the organizing axes. Each row carries the scene's page span and its subsidized year (or "(unspecified)"), which makes the table primarily a chronology aid — a way to place non-linear scenes on the timeline.
- Cite-as-written idiosyncrasies. It renders the "Year of the Yushityu 2007…" as the "YEAR OF THE / SHITSU 2007" year; tags "Ennet House Drug and Alcohol Recovery House (sic)"; and carries assorted synopsis typos ("Maranthe" for Marathe, "Gatley" for Gately, "Genlte" for Gentle, "Ennett House"). These are the source's own and are kept cite-as-written.
Against the archive's scene spine
The archive's spine cuts the same pp. 3–981 into 185 scenes; this guide's table has 189 rows (187 scenes once its two bare footnote pointers are set aside). The difference comes from a handful of places where the guide splits more finely, offset by places where it fuses scenes the archive keeps apart. The table below is the residue at a glance; the fuller list stays with the archive's working notes.

Beyond these, three boundaries genuinely differ by a single page — the Saturday-classes scene starts at the guide's p. 306 vs. the archive's p. 307; a Marathe/Steeply beat at p. 490 vs. p. 489; the Marathe/Kate bar scene at p. 775 vs. p. 774 — the kind of off-by-one that two readers drawing the same line will always produce. (Another five apparent one-page differences are just the two maps recording a shared mid-page boundary differently — one counts the boundary page with the scene that ends there, the other with the scene that begins there.) On the subsidized years there are no disagreements at all: every scene the guide dates to a specific year (the Year of Glad opening; the Tucks-Medicated-Pad professional-conversationalist; the Trial-Size-Dove-Bar Clenette monologue; the two B.S. flashbacks it dates 1960 and 1963; the Perdue-Wonderchicken McGarrett/Furillo essay) matches the archive's adjudicated dating. Where they seem to differ, the guide has simply left a scene "(unspecified)" that the archive has since dated.

Chronology and the novel's non-linear structure (the guide exists to help readers place scenes on the subsidized-time line); the problem of segmentation itself (what counts as one scene in a book built of montage and hard cuts); the endnotes' ambiguous status as narrative (a guide can call them essential yet give them no scenes of their own).
