The vendor patter is irony pressed into the service of a dead-serious market. Pemulis and Axford in papery ballpark caps and a Sox-colors wiener-tub work the drug-scan line with cheerful punning cosplay — "Get your urine here!", "Clinically sterile urine!", "Piping hot!", "Urine trouble? Urine luck!" — a whole vaudeville of jokey warmth draped over a transaction on which kids' entire tennis careers depend. Nobody buying is joking; failing the GC/MS scan is a real catastrophe. The ballpark-vendor bit is pure ironic performance, and its function is to make an anxious, high-stakes black-market exchange feel like a lark — irony as sales-register, lubricating a market that is underneath completely earnest.
