Three faces have resolved into place above summer-weight sportcoats and half-Windsors across a polished pine conference table shiny with the spidered light of an Arizona noon.
Context
The novel's opening page, and the light is already catalogued: the three Deans "resolve into place" (optical vocabulary — an image coming into focus) across a tabletop carrying "the spidered light of an Arizona noon." Carlisle logs the phrase under Light & halation; the raw supports no more than that this is the book's first worked light-effect, seen by the narrator who can't be seen into. Same-scene companion diction later in the raw — the AC-stirred dust "dancing jaggedly in the slanted plane of windowlight" (pp. 5-6) and "The Brewster's-Angle light of the tabletop" as a rose flush behind Hal's closed lids (pp. 9-10, a physics-of-polarized- reflection term in a terrified teenager's narration) — noted for assembly in the Flags section rather than given entries (sightings mode).
