Endnote 327: the Bolex turret gloss
Bolex H64, -32 and -16 models come with a turret that accepts three C-mount lenses, which gives the models a kind of multi-eyed, alien-facial look.
Context
Called from Notkin's account of the Entertainment's "big technical hook (the Auteur's films always involved some sort of technical hook)… some very unusual kind of single lens on the Bolex H32's turret" (159). Two loads. (1) The camera described as a face: the tri-lens turret gives the instrument "a kind of multi-eyed, alien-facial look" — the apparatus that looks at you has a monstrous face of its own, kin to 071's Mario-built-into-an-optical-instrument and The Joke's camera-as-mirror. (2) The standing cross-entry question: the two-head-mount-rigs flag (The Joke's "tri-lensed Bolex H32" during JOI's lifetime vs. 071's willed H64 dated to the first post-suicide Xmas) anticipated this note, and what the raw actually says is only that the three-C-mount-lens turret is common to the H64, -32 and -16 models alike — so "tri-lensed" cannot distinguish the rigs, and the note resolves nothing about the chronology wrinkle. Its call-site does add that (per Notkin) the Entertainment's wobble-lens rode an H32's turret — an H32 in Himself's own hands for the last film, consistent with 085's H32-during-the-lifetime.
