His insomnia worsens as Madame Psychosis’s hiatus enters its third week and WYYY tries bringing back poor Miss Diagnosis again, who’s started in on a Pig-Latin reading of the Revelation of John that makes you so embarrassed for her it’s uncomfortable. Context
The catalogued hit, the scene's opening beat: Madame Psychosis's absence from the air is measured in weeks like weather, and the substitute (Miss Diagnosis, a name that only works on radio) is unlistenable. Mario's insomnia is radio-shaped — the show was his sleep aid and his idea of "valid art that is about stuff that is real," and the raw's last line about the show's theme music, "what sounds so unacceptable without her there" (pp. 593-594), closes the same loop. The scene then walks Mario straight into the book's dramatic irony: he stands outside Ennet House — where the missing voice is actually living — "arrested by the quiet but unmistakable sound of a recording of a broadcast of ‘Sixty Minutes More or Less with Madame Psychosis’" from an upstairs window (pp. 591-592, a taped Year-of-the-Wonderchicken show; noted below though the motif catalogues don't carry it).
