The Fackelmann scam and the wraith's return — "so intent were they on the…"
so intent were they on the Blues’ somnolent hum, blotting everything out, while Pamela Hoffman-Jeep lay wrapped tight in the other room dreaming of damsels and towers
Context
A dream attributed rather than rendered: as Gately rises to join Fackelmann's binge, P.H.-J. sleeps swaddled in the next room dreaming the fairy-tale dream Gately imagines for the book's most beautiful sleeper ("kittenish and serene, never drooling"). Texture because the damsels and towers are Gately's gloss, not narrated dream-material — but she's the scene's third dreamer, asleep at the exact moment of his relapse.
