Before Hal narrates the bills-for-teeth dream, Mario reports its soundtrack: Hal talking from inside it, in the voice of a boy politely requesting more punishment — which is exactly what the dream turns out to be about. The frat-paddle line is the dream's guilt-logic leaking out audibly.
